I am looking for a good server distro... What are anyones suggestions?

Have just installed Gentoo (again!!) on my desktop, but need something for my web/ssh/mail/ftp/anything-else-i-can-use server...

I have heard (a while ago) that debian was the best server distro...

Anyone got any thoughts?

I would suggest Debian like you said.

I run Debian on both my Web/Email and NFS Server with no problems.... it's a really nivce distro as you can just install the base system system and then the apps or services that you need on top of that.

Then the bi-weekly apt-get update and the system is sorted!

Just my thoughts anyway!

Server Optimised Linux
Gentoo is very good too
Debian
SUSE/MDK/RH/FC2 <--not very good, but big corporations use them for their support and Oracle
Live-CDs
Basically any working distro that gives you net access is ok

are you going to be using a control panel at all? alot of control panel makers want you to use RedHat or another packaged system, otherwise i say gentoo all the way

Hmm...interesting thread. So would a Debian based distro (like Mepis) do better than say, Suse or Knoppix for this purpose?

I'm going with Gentoo - its what I use on my desktop...

I guess I'd rather stick with what I know for this, and dick about with my desktop setup...

If you want a stable, hands-free server system running Linux, I would recommend running Debian (Stable) - it does exactly what it says on the tin.

Set up the server, install cron-apt so that it automatically installed security updates, and then just leave it in the corner to do what it does best :)

knoppix and MEPIS are unstable, or SID, of debian, tainted to make it rock and boot as LiveCD

Its no different actually, just the interface and naming conventions in some teeny weeny parts

Knoppix and Mepis are really designed for desktop systems - for a server you probably don't want to either run the unstable tree, nor run X.
