why are there different commands for configuring things in different versions of linux?

Like 'xorgconfig' can be used in slackware but not other versions that I have tried. Is it so important to have a different configuring program for each version? And why change from Xfree86 to Xorg?

Is it possible to get the configuring program for slackware to work in fedora?

I have tried looking, but could not find the answers on forums. Maybe you could help me...

In some cases it's just a shell script that pretty much makes life easier for the developers of the distributions. I agree it can be confusing especially when you're trying to help someone on another system and you're used to the custom configuration tools. My advice would be to just learn how it's done the way it's supposed to be done. That way you won't have too much of a problem jumping between distributions and even to other UNIX systems.

the designers of each distro want to get you hooked on theirs and not someone elses. also they think they have the best config scripts. if you want to make sure you can get stuff done try learning the config files of the progs you use
