Not too sure why the thread "who uses bittorrent" was closed, you said why would you want to admit to using something that can be used for illegal downloading?
Well yeah lots of apps can be used to download something illegally, think about it. The post I made in the thread introduced a technical question on the use of bittorrent; and I thank duncanbojangles for answering my question.
As to why the mod closed this thread, the answer to that is censorship. I want to bring your attention to a similar thread(to which I will now have to unsubscribe myself since it is about kazaa, another evil and illegal download tool); yes, the kazaa thread has gone on for months and nobody had the moral fortitude to suggest that file-sharing can potentially be illegal and close the thread.
Anyway, if you do use such programs to download *stuff* do so at your own risk cause it can be a security issue. As for us Canadians, last time I checked we don't have to worry about the RIAA(or some Canadian equivalent), at least not yet.

It's quite clear in the Aceptable Use Policy (http://www.jupitermedia.com/corporate/privacy/aup.html) in the 6th bullet item
You will not use these forums to violate any laws nor to discuss illegal activities.
And with duncanbojangles saying flat out that he uses it for illegal purposes, making that flamebait. I decided it would be better to close it before it became a situation

Like you said, bittorrent is no different than ftp, http, *****peer in that all can be used illegally. Discussing HOW to use bittorrent was not why the thread was closed. When one person posted "I use it to download copies of copyrighted materials", then that opens the door for someone else to post "And you can download Doom3 from here" (as an example). So the thread was closed to keep the "worms in the can".
I'm sure if you would like to open a thread on HOW to use bittorrent, it would be open as long as people did not start posting links to copyrighted material.
I have posted a thread previously on using Azureus to download Slackware 10 and it was not closed. If I had posted on using Azureus to download Chronicles of Riddick then it would have been closed. It was not a personal action pointed at you.

Following the logic , I could say that Windows XP or OSX or Red Hat Linux, or Suse can be used to illegaly download software (or the other way around).Isn't it?

My car could be used for illegal activites as well. I could be transporting narcotics, illegal aliens, any number of things. It could even be used as a getaway car for a bank robery.
Of course, under my control, the worse it would do is a wee bit of speeding now and then. I'm so bad. :p
-Waylena, who only downloads things that are legal to download.

You could, but if you start discussing how to do so on this board the thread will be locked. That's what they're saying.
Edit: I think.;) I don't want to put words in anyone's mouth.:)

There is a big difference between "could" and "do"
I 'could' stab someone in the neck with a pen (Casino was a great movie :))
It's not how a tool could be used, but how someone uses it. When was the last time you broke someones arm with a handshake? It doesn't happen unless you make it happen.
P2P can be used for good things like sharing Linux ISOs (legal ones) and distributing large Service Packs.
It can also be used to download Windows CDs and games.
Just like a car, you can drive it to point A to point B, but the minute you start using it to run people over is the minute you start using it for 'unlawfull' reasons.
Final point...use P2P for good, not evil
(and don't drive over people in your car :D)
Gah, more points!
Guns.
Guns have been used for hundreds of years to hunt for food. Because of the increase in crime using guns, people have a very negative view of guns these days.
P2P has taken the same path. It was designed for good things, but bad people gave it a bad name.

I would like to note, that the link to the site I posted on the bittorrent thread, http://bt.etree.org is a BitTorrent site for Live LEGAL!!! Downloads. Everything on there is perfectly legal. All the bands on that site endorse the trading of the live tapings of their concerts.

Is that why I get "Illegal Operation" messages in Windows? And I thought it was because I worked in a hospital.
Once, we had a patient who couldn't make it to the restroom while he was in the main lobby- he had a illegal download.

What about just bumping into them with your car, not actually drive over them?

I didn't realize the gravity of someone's advertizing of illegal activities in these forums; I thought it was ok to joke around about that kind of thing. sorry Icarus. :o

Dude, what are you talking about! Windows RG was DA BOMBEST WINDOWS EVAR! :p
I've never seen my "missing DLL" error boxes be so responsive-- RG does such a great job of getting those things up there for me to see-- When I use Windows, I expect my "missing DLL" error messages, and I expect them NOW!

Sorry about opening the floodgates. I was just curious as to a rough percentage of users that come on the forums here that have tried it. Didn't really think it through though.
I wouldn't object if you want to delete the thread entirely.
