I think he is getting some kind of volume discount. He's been using quite a lot of those recently.

Wired (http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/11.11/linus_pr.html)

had a good article on Linus.

A couple of other good articles:

LinuxWorld (http://www.linuxworld.com/story/44851.htm)

http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/04_05/b3868110_mz063.htm

You could try emailing him and asking the questions.

I'm pretty sure nothing anyone says here would interest him. If you were Linus, the creator of one of the greatest kernels in the world, would you want to listen to someone talk about how they can't compile the kernel, get their audio drivers working, or the scroll wheel in X working? I think not. Linus has better things he would need to discuss. So if you'd like to interact with Linus, study the kernel and point out an improvement or bug, send him an e-mail telling him how great he is, or start up a casual chat on IRC with him. Don't bug him with USB camera issues.

Man, I feel mean. I don't mean this in a mean way, but if you were a famous football player, would you want to talk to some kid about his kicking problem? It's the same way with Linus.

I was sure to say "kernel" and not "OS" so Richard Stallman didn't kill me in my sleep.

Eh, sorry. I'll try to be nicer in the future. The problem is that I could really imagine someone here asking him personally for help with their installation. It's the kind of "ask before you research" mentality that makes me bitter.

I HATE that mentality, too.

But wouldn't that be something to brag to your script kiddie little friends?

dude... I thought Linux freakin sucked, until Linus himself walked me through installing it!

I wonder how hard it be to pass yourself off as Linus to someone who'd never met him? Just go to a place, and say, hey, I'm Linus, and I made a little computer program called Linux... you've heard of it, maybe? ;)

How many people actually know what Linus looks like? I've seen a few pictures of him, and there's nothing in his physical features that really set him apart from most other people. He doesn't look like the pasty long haired hacker that RMS does. You would have to speak with a Finnish accent, and that might be hard to reproduce.

"Haylo, I'm Linus."
"Nice to meet you. You wouldn't happen to know anyone named Charlie Brown?*chuckle*"
"Noa. But I deed write Leanux. Have yoo heard of eet?"
"Isn't Linux that little android that looks like a blonde kid IBM is making?"
"...Yeah, sometheeng like that."

Shouldn't you show a *little* respect at least? Remember Linux is not an OS, it's the same as Microsoft's kernel32.dll (with fewer bugs, I admit), all those great utilities - the GNU utilities - you've got them thanks to RMS's ideas.

As for the Hurd, it's pretty complete AFAIK. Here's my understanding of it:
The kernel isn't complete/stable/mature, yet. But the GNU developers don't make a kernel, just the Hurd libraries. They *do* help fixing Mach (the kernel), though. The problems with "the Hurd" are actually (mostly) problems with the Mach kernel. Work is being done to make the Hurd work with L4 (http://os.inf.tu-dresden.de/L4/), though, and then it might work better.

Even if my understanding of this is incorrect, you have no excuse for bashing on RMS - no matter what you've accomplished.

(nothing personal about this rant - I just don't like it when people complain about RMS and his "zealotry", etc, etc)

Definitely gotta give props to RMS. Even if the only thing he ever did was make GCC, he'd still be a god to me.

The Hurd is actually pretty cool from what I've read about it. It just got stuck with a bad rap for not using the Linux kernel. There are hundreds, well, maybe not hundreds, but plenty of other kernels out there. And RMS does have a point: His tools are used everyday on tons of Linux and other Unix boxes, but he gets bashed 'cause he wants a little recognition.

But he still looks like a hacker.

Actually it's Linus Torvalds.
Short version: He's the dude who originally wrote the Linux kernel.
