From reading an earlier post, it seems that Linux users have similar tastes in music, so how about in movies? Some of the movies that I like the most are not popular in the main stream but are great movies. Donnie Darko and Boondock Saints are two favorites.

'Creator' was filmed for the mainstream, but never really made it in the theaters. Most folks have never heard of it.
It remains one of my favorite DVDs.
Along with 'Reefer Madness.' ;)

Catch Me If You Can...........it was a B rate movie about a guy in high school hustling street races. Some cool race scenes and a nice '68 Chevelle.:D
And no I haven't even bothered to see the Tom Hanks movie of the same name.

Three that come to mind for me are:
1.City of Lost children
2.Man Bites Dog(not for the faint of heart)
3THX1138
I highly recommend these to anyone wanting to see a cool non-mainstream movie. And whoah! How could I almost forget my buddies at SPDST (http://www.spdst.com/)
Something else I saw that is cool is THIS (http://linuxmovies.sourceforge.net/press/creative.cow.html)

Boondock Saints is a awsome movie, I also like almost all of the Kevin Smith movies execpt Chasing Amy ( I know this still might be considered mainstream)
I also like movies like Ninja Scroll, I am a huge cartoon fan :)

Everyone who's seen Boondock Saints loves it, it's a good move. Let's see, Pi and Rounders. Rounders never made it, or at least not yet. :D mmmm poker.

i'm going to have to agree with EnigmaOne on Reefer Madness and with Bosox79 about the animation and kevin smith (and he probably is mainstream, but oh well).

Bell, Book and Candle Is this a movie? I know there is a German music group called Bell, Book and Candle.
Thumbs up for Kevin Smith. Jay & Silent Bob has to be one of the funniest duos of the late 90's.

hmm....i dont know if anyone considers these too 'mainstream' but
my lesser-known fav's include donnie darko, waking life, and uhf.
Other ones: [more or less 'mainstream' - i dont know, how do you define mainstream ?!? Is it something that is popular with most of society; a large budget - hyped via corporate media; something that is promoted to the lowest common denominator of audience, non-controversial..
I dont think its any single of one of these remarks, but rather a combination of them]
fight club, stand by me, office space, memento, revenge of the nerds, adventures in babysitting.

I seriously hope you are referring to some obscure movie and not this pile of garbage:

Hey Angelina Jolie is hot but even she couldn't save this piece of ****. If this is the movie you are talking about, yes it is mainstream and was released all over the country back in 95.
My favorite non-mainstream movie?

I would have to say Dead Alive. It is a great cheesy horror flick.

"Existo" was one of the funniest movies ever. I saw it at a film festval, don't know if it's available anywhere.
"Free Enterprise" was fun.
"eXistenZ" was a creepy brain fart. Had to see it twice.
"Last Night" left me temporarily obsessed with the end of the world.
"Zero Effect" had a Scrabble scene -and- a planetarium scene. What more could a girl want?

Nuts, you guys got my first one, Dead Alive. I don't think I've ever laughed so hard at a horror movie:) On a similar note, Faust: Love of the Damned is a pretty funny horror/almost porn movie ("I call him smooth man" -one of the characters from the movie, I forget what her name was:)).
I'll second Red Green's Duct Tape Forever, even though I haven't seen it yet, just because Red Green is in it:)
More mainstream, but still a little obscure are any of the movies from Dark Castle productions (House on Haunted Hill, 13 Ghosts, Ghost Ship, Gothika). Some of them were better than others, but I found them all entertaining.
Here's another good one: Reign of Fire. I had never heard of this before, but the dragon special effects are awesome.
That's all I can think of right now. I'll probably come up with more later though.
Oh, to comment on some others posted here: Loved Memento (the only movie I've ever rewound at a movie night with my friends and the most silent we've ever been watching a movie lest we miss something), Hated Fight Club (apparently I'm the only one though; I consider this mainstream too), Liked most of Inteview with the Vampire except the ending, Have to see Requiem for a Dream, since so many people I know have recommended it. I think I've reached my opinion quota for the day (and it's only 8:00AM where I am), so I'll have to stop now:D

Hell yeah for Kentucky Fried Movie, Donnie Darko, Fight Club, Memento, UHF, and Office Space. :D
I have the distinct feeling that my favorites are all mainstream:
1. Monty Python and the Holy Grail
2. Braveheart
3. Wayne's World
4. Wayne's World 2
5. Akira
6. Spaceballs
7. Dirty Work
8. The Exorcist
9. Wrongfully Accused
10. A Fish Called Wanda
As for less popular flicks, I love Dog Soldiers, Berlin Is in Germany, Happiness, Mars Attacks!, Mouse Hunt, Pootie Tang, Waking Ned Devine, and Cane Toads: An Unnatural History.
Thumbs up for Dead Alive.
Trainspotting.

Chasing Amy is ..a movie with actors screaming at each
other. I like the rest of Kevin Smiths's stuff, pretty much..
Office Space, Pi, Impromptu, and I hope I can find the
9 hour TV movie of "Wagner" with Richard Burton.
The new Manchurian Candidate is VERY creepy..."just
a little pressure here..''..aggh!!
I have to check the store shelves. They should have
an Alien Vs. Predator cereal out by now.;) :D

Equilibrium.
Not relesed very widely, so it fits here. Think Matrix Before the Matrix, without bullet time, and with a better story! I like the matrix, but its just not very original.
Equilibrium is based in world were emotion is surprest with a pill. After all, emotion is what makes bad things happen. If you think the action scenes (http://files.filefront.com/2148646;/pub3/media/videomovie/) were neat, than check out the story! Its Better!!:D
Uh, yeah. Get it. I've never said "wow" in a movie before. Nor have I come so close to tears.
