hey fellas'
i am attempting to put together a small linux user group, one that would basically coordinate online, to work on whatever projects we all decide would be the most effective and fun, with the goal being mastering linux, and technology in general. i would like beginning programming to be a side-shoot of the group, with an ultimate goal of maybe starting our own open source project. ive been studying python for a few weeks, but we dont have to go with that. the first project i would like to do, providing enough people are interesteed, is finally get a Linux From Scratch (http://lfs.osuosl.org/lfs/news.html) system put together. We can all sort of work on it together, maybe try to set a goal of a week or so. (I know that some of us will have full-time jobs, family, school, etc...) This thread was the beginning of my idea, but ive decided that it would be better tp stick with one subject, namely technology... (he he pretty broad subject though, eh?) but really, i love computers, i have so much fun learning new things. i just want to get together a few like minded people so we can all learn from each other and pool our resources. a little about me: i am 28, a single dad, work full-time, live in eugene oregon. my hobbies are reading, hangin, with my main chicks, (my daughter and her mom), doin' the nerd thing, and writing. here is my site (http://www.geocities.com/cigar_shop_indian/) i just put together, with a little info about what i think would make a good group. i wont have 'net access at my place until next week, so i wont be able to get back to anyone until monday. (im at work until 5:00pm Pacific tonight, i have 'net access here.) so shoot me a mail before then, or ill get back to you on monday. i will be reading the Linux From Scratch book (http://lfs.osuosl.org/lfs/view/stable/) over the weekend, and preparing for that. later.

shoot me a note if you're interested, or have any ideas:

here is a temporary meeting place we can use until we get our own server set up, with our own site (we should also get an IRC chan together a.s.a.p.):

my yahoo group (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/gearhead_speedfreaks/)

and here is the previos thread discussing my idea for a group:

previous group thread i started (http://justlinux.com/forum/showthread.php?threadid=131394)

Don't build the stable LFS book if you can help it. 6.0 is about to be released...

So, I read a good deal of the book (stable) over the weekend. Im ready to roll... Anybody want to join me? Its always more fun to have a few people to do a project like this with... Come on, put down the Doom 3 just for a few days... Think how cool it will feel to have a linux system you put together from the filesystem up, from source to boot. (no pun intended...) Come on, just say fsck it. Shoot me a mail.

come on fellas, wheres the team spirit? so far its just me and dan, but were going to give it a go. (i havent actually talked to dan about doing L.F.S., but he seems enthusiastic about working on an open-source project.) ok, im gonna check back here is a few minutes, and if theres not, oh say, a good solid 50-60 troops sworn in, im calling out the big guns. (and its not a free porn server. how could you even think that? pervert.) seriosly though. nows your chance. you want to be a real nerd? how about being able to tell your friends that you are part of an elite computer hobbyist club, sworn to secrecy and that speaks in only acronyms and secret computer codes. youcan even have a cool nick-name. but i got dibs on 'hard-drive'. you can be 'ram-disk'. or 'L2'. dude! or 'g-rep'! thats dope! thats the gangsterest computer name ive ever heard...

I'll be happy to help with a project but I am only marginally effective in C++ and I don't even have a machine with Linux yet

Hey buddy, don't worry about the coding. I only know a scrape of Python myself. But I am learning. I'm studying everyday from books, and information I've horded from the 'net. The software project idea is more of a long term goal. For the moment, the goal is just to get organized. The first project I would like to pursue is building Linux From Scratch together. See my posts above (in this thread) for more info and links. So it's perfect that you don't have a Linux system. (Well, actually not totally perfect, because you will need one to build L.F.S.) Nothing is set in stone, if no one wants to build L.F.S., or there is something else that sounds more appealing to the group in general, i'm game. My aim is only to get together a group of people that share the same passion for technology, and desire to learn about it, that I do. I think that the opportunities that become tangible with a group of people sharing experience and knowledge is well worth the overhead of organization. So my goal is to learn, and share my experience with others of all levels of experience, both greater and lesser equally. I guess that’s enough lofty pontification, but hey, PeteTheNotSoGr8, if your still interested in just being a part, and sharing your experience with the rest of the group (that would be me and Dan, at the moment, he he) join up brother man. 'ram-disk' is still available... how could you pass that up? i don't think you can buddy...

head over to my Yahoo group (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/gearhead_speedfreaks/) if you want to do this, for now it is serving as a meeting place, until i get the server situations together...
