the ick part is that archive.org screwed up their backing up of lno so that if you access the forum, you are lead right into the jl.com site.

<edit>

dang it. I had a list of tracking backwards too, which i just lost. Time to retrieve it... Earliest reference i found was 4-17-1999 http://justlinux.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&postid=2

then, looking at the members list, we have that the earliest registration is on 3-31-1999 (but looks weird, since 20 copies of it) and the next morelegit one after that, is on 4-01-1999, that of searcher.

But don't forget that just before LNO became JustLinux, LinuxPlanet was merged into LNO. Take this thread (http://justlinux.com/forum/showthread.php?threadid=380) for example. Notice the rex "X"'s? Check the properties of them, the domain is www.linuxplanet.com. Check this search (http://justlinux.com/forum/search.php?action=showresults&searchid=992190&sortby=lastpost&sortorder=descending) for info in the merger.

I guess what I'm saying is, what you find in old posts and the member list would not be 100% accurate for LNO.

Well, they do align with the ideas of Sensei saying himself (in an interview) that he started the forum around April-May 1999. So I would still side with the member list being correct.

Does Sensei still post on the forum under a different name?

He only has 6 posts total on the forum. Is he still around?

For those who don't know, this forum was originally called linuxnewbie.org, and it used to be a lot more openended than it is now. You could put ANYTHING you wanted under off topic, leading to lots and lots of crazy flame wars. Someone once started a thread about how Islam is an evil religion, which I actually reported tot he moderators. Can you imagine something like that happening in here now? They changed the format just in time, around the time of the beginning of the Iraq War, thus sparing us all a lot of grief, IMHO. I have lots of angry opinions about things going on in the world, but this is where I learn something useful, and take part in something positive. I love you guys! (Starts weeping) Really, I mean it.

I miss thier posts as well...
I have been here a while myself... although not as regular as I would like. But I still pop in occassionally when I get stumped or just want to see what is up. The place has really quieted down a lot.

TIMNOS was a pretty regular individual as well.

I've been in and out for a while, too. I miss how active this forum used to be. I remember when the list of 10 active threads was too short because it was rolling over to quickly, now I'll see the same five sit on top for weeks.
I think I'll comment more often even when I don't have a guaranteed solution, at least to maintain forum activity.

Yay: my 2^9th post!

We have to admit that Linux is a lot more developed than the time this thread started. Nowaday we can slip in a distro, answer a few questions and expect a full blown Linux operational in about 15 minutes.

The Linux's way of never asking a driver from the user is now copied by MS Winodws Vista and Win7. A few years back it has been reported that some PC users couldn't tell the difference when using Linux and MS Windows.

Hardware technology has also come to a halt more or less. We haven't had any major break through on CPU, memory, hard disk or graphic cards. All of them work faultless in plug and play.

Linux will become more important in future because it is free and full of software many of which are superior to the those in the proprietory sector.

Less activities means less people needing answers and this is the way I see it. I wouldn't like to see PC users complaining the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) everyday here as in some MS WIndows forums.

The quietness is in fact everywhere in every forum. Some are obvious still busier than the others.

For some reasons development on hardware, software, operating systems have all slowed down.

I have noticed that a lot of the web sites have gone back to the 'kiss' design which require less office personal and then a lot of the businesses are still using older computers. The main thing that appears to be getting any attention is anything with 'touch screen effects'. There doesn't seem to be anything new that requires new designed software.
