I wanted to start a new thread, and maybe take the conversation in a better direction. This is from another thread, I think it's pretty self-explanatory.

I apologize for framing my post in terms of the "is linux ready for the desktop?" question, which is pure FUD. I feel like an *** for falling for that trick. Those of us-- apparently not everybody here, but definitely me-- who want Linux and open source to continue to grow and to influence the direction of IT don't need to worry about the software-- which is great, and getting better all the time. We need to ask ourselves and each other what we can do to create a more Linux-positive culture.

In other words, we don't need better software....

We need better manuals. In my opinion a good computer manual should have three sections: One for beginners, one for advanced users, and one for easy reference. When you try to combine all three you get something that is pure torture for 85 percent of the population. When you consider what they charge for these books, they really shouldn't be such crap.

We need better support. Why doesn't one computer shop in my area have anybody who knows anything about linux.? Presumably these guys already know all about computers, so it wouldn't be that hard to learn, and they'd have a business advantage over everyone else in the area. Hey, these guys are computer professionals! You'd think that they'd be just a little bit curious.

We need better manners. I've said this before; I'm sick to death of being talked down to by some arrogant geek who thinks he's god cause he watches his porn from the command line. Ignorance about computers is not a moral issue. And I'm sorry you were picked on in gym glass.
