http://www2.hardocp.com/article.html?art=NjQy has a very good article on running Doom 3, some tests, and some tips.
http://www2.hardocp.com/article.html?art=NjQ0 is a hardware guide for Doom 3.
Will you be getting Doom3 in the next few days?

If we are lucky, the Linux binaries will be available next week (stress, lucky) and then we can drool on the game.
I think it is way way over hyped. Heck, last night I saw a news report on NBC about it expecting to make 4 million in sales...
And people say PC gaming is dead :D

That's why I keep Win98 on a partition, to run Far Cry, Doom, HalfLife. Kind of the "I like Chevys but I'll drive a Ford if it gets me there" philosophy. :)

Last time I booted Windows to play a game (boot it too often for work though :() was Tron 2.0 (excellent game!)
But with Doom 3 being available for Linux I'll wait...I did for Neverwinter Nights, and that was a whole year!

By the time Linux binaries are available, the game will probably be a lot cheaper anyway. :D

By linux binaries do you mean the game will be available for download, or do you mean the binaries for the install, but we still have to go out and get it?

Or at least a few bucks cheaper. ;)
And at minimum, by the time the Linux binaries are available, somebody ought to have the BFG GeForce 6800 GT video card that I want (my Ti4200 might run it, but only at fairly low detail and low resolution -- but I like my games at 1280x1024 and high detail, if I can easily enough).
lpaulgib -- the game will likely never be "available for download", at least not anytime in the next 3-4 years. If you're waiting for that, then you're either waiting to break the law, or you're waiting for Doom 4 (since that seems to be about the interval that Id releases source code -- just before they release the next version of a game). What Icarus is (and I am) talking about is a Linux installer on Id's FTP site (or somewhere) that will allow us to run the game natively, but we'll still pay for it.
I am acting as if the "release date" of the game is the date that the Linux installer becomes available, personally. ;)
(However, note that somebody has already sent a patch to the winex-devel mailing list to allow the Windows version of Doom 3 to get up and running under WineX... but as far as I'm concerned that's a lost cause. ;))

I knew someone would since there are people that run Unreal Tournament and Quake1-3 with Wine

Well yeah, I was assuming they werent going to just hand Linuxers a free version of the game. I meant that maybe they had the entire game also developed for linux, and you would just pay over the web, rather than release it on shelves. Thinking back, dumb thought.

You'll be able to get the binaries (the executable code) for free, but you'll need to "plug in" the game data (levels, monsters, and such) from a purchased version. In a year or two, id will probably release the source code, but the game data will always be copyrighted.

I realy think the game sucks it is no better than quake 3 and mabie worse in some respects. There is no demo for a reson there is nothing new here except for the graphics, and online the gameplay is laggie at best, try the filters to get a server sorry they do not work all that well.
Sort servers by ping guess again
filter out password servers sorry mabie with updates
There is potenial but it is far from ground breaking
UT2004 is a much better game to play
the graphich are nice in one respect but they do not get what they reach for leaving an unfinnished feel.
Id save your money and go get a good dinner.

I started playing it this afternoon, really it is basically a generic shooter so far, but I guess when you think about it, what is half-life, Unreal, Far cry, etc but basically the same thing.? I'm still waiting for the ultimate shooter/strategy/mystery game.
The best game I have ever played so far on the computer was the first Unreal- it had a little of everything.

For all the people out there who say that Doom3 is just another FPS, it is. That's the point: iD wanted to make Doom3 similar in feel to Doom and Doom2, i.e. a lotta fun. They didn't want you to waste your time, they wanted you to go out and kick some demon respawning ***! The thing that sets Doom3 apart from other FPS's is ambience: the graphics, sound, and demons that pop outta nowhere are all put together to creep you out. So, yes, Doom3 is just another FPS, but what was Doom and Doom2 when you think about it? Nothing new from what they had back then, just better at it.

;) Exactly.
And playing it in the middle of the night, when the wind is blowing outside, and all my lights are out...well...I for one think they've accomplished their task. And that "whisper voice" is *FREAKY*
Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go change my pants. Let's just say that the Imp suprised me...

"No, it is the rabbit!"
"What! I soiled my armor over that?"

You know they do sell adult diapers, don't you? :D The first demon spawned right behind me and I was glad I had the plastic carpet protector under my chair.

Well tonight was my second night actually playing the game. I dont have a great graphics card, Geforce FX 5700 Ultra. Well I thought it was good til I installed Doom3.
Game is fun, good sound etc - very dark. I get random crashes though, has kicked me back to my desktop 3 times in 2 days. I dont get it.
My system is a P3.4ghz ( running at 3.4), 1GB DDr2 Ram, GF 57000 Ulltra.
It's pretty damn annoying. The lighting in the game is the best feature IMO - and that's about it, oh and some spooky sounds.
I'd give it a 7/10.

Try starting up the game, go to Options, then Advanced Options, and turning on "Vertsync" in the game itself. The game ignores the videocard/system settings and uses its own settings.
Also, look for some websites with "doom3 tips", there was one tip where you could uncompress the game data if you had room, and the game would run smoother.

Oh it plays nice, I run it at 1280x1024. I will be just running around ( probably with a flash light ) and then it will just kick me to the desktop.
It could be because I'm running it on Windows 2000. :(

Yeah, a guy I know was playing before he went to bed (which he says he will never do again) and his wife came up behind him and started whispering "follow me" in his ear. Totally freaked him out that he couldn't find who was saying it (he had headphones on).:)
