Hi everybody. I've started a group on Yahoo dedicated to facilitating the sharing of information related to the fine art of hacking cars and computers. There is a zen in the two together that always seems to escape me. Anyways, one of the first goals of the group will be to build an extensive archive of all the best hacking/linux documents that all the members have. I would love to build a highly organized repository of txt/pdf files, so that we can all benefit from each others time surfing the net. obviosly, any file should be credited to the author, and not redistributed without their permission if it is the type of document where that is relevant. I know personally I have collected tons of great text files/pdfs over a period of time, i will soon (i am at work right now) be posting all of my files to the group. let me know what you think. you can reach me through the group:
gearhead_speedfreaks (http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/gearhead_speedfreaks/)
or better yet at:
bryan(at)unitedgaribay.com
I really want to use this group to create a small group of friends that can learn from each other. That is the whole point, to learn as much as possible, from the free resources that are available on the net. I cant afford school right now, so this is the next best thing. I wouldnt mind having a little focus on python as well, as I am just learning it, and having a lot of fun...

The URL for the group is:

One further note:

I think it would be fun, as well, to have group projects, such as setting up Linux From Scratch systems, or having a few servers set up tp play around with the different protocols, and maybe have a few web-dav folders, so we could all share files. Maybe down the road work on an open-source software project. I think it would be fun to make a monthly newsletter as well, that had a summary of the goings on of the group for that month, with links to all relevant files and transcripts. Anyways, most likely this wont come together the way Ive planned, or maybe not even at all, but it would be fun.

To have a group focused on using the free resources available on the net to learn as much as possible, as efficiently as possible.

O.T. I just discovered NetHack (http://www.nethack.org/) !!! I think I've found my new favorite open-source project... Revel in the dorkness of an ASCII role playing game!!!

Okay buddies, I know this seems dorky, but I just want to share text files and have a few servers running different operating systems to play around with... Come on, take a risk... It will be fun... I feel so pathetic every time I look at my dumb group and see *0* members...

This sounds interesting and I will prb join when I get home.

You have to learn to be a bit more paitient though. You posted the first message at 12:00 and the third one at 2:00. you have to give people more time to read and respond to messages. (Not everyone is bored enough to check the board every 30 mins like me...)

hey friend,
I wasnt talking about just this afternoon... I was just joking around, because I initially formed the group a few months ago. I was only kidding though, because I havent done any work on the group. I still havent really got it put together. But I will though.... (I have no 'net access at home, only at work...)

P.S. Cool site... Do you live in India?

I didn't know that the group was a few months old as I didn't actually visit it before now, so I found it kind of annoying that you were complaining that no-one joined within 2 hours of your posting.

Glad you liked the site. Yeah, I am from India but am currently in NJ, USA.

I just ordered 'net access for my place, so Im set to get my group and site rollin'. I will also get a server set up to share my collection of files, tutorials, how-to's etc... My line should be ready by next week...

P.S. This will be the first project I am going to do w/ my group. Check out the site, tell me what you think.

I'm pretty sure I have a good idea of what computer hacking means; but I'm not sure what it means to hack cars. Does it mean modifying the engine, suspension, chassis, etc. ? I was just curious.

Hey nabatse. The term hacking, to me, in reference to cars, is more about just
being curious how things work, and fine tuning the various systems to learn
how they can be manipulated. As usual, I have low cash, so hacking computer crap
or cars is more from necessity than curiousity for me, but Ive learned to enjoy it, and its actually my hobby. So hacing a car is basicaaly the same as hacking a network somewhere. Gather information. Explore solutions/exploits. Implement.
Hope that helps. Donnie

P.S. How is the summertime in Berkeley this year? Is it hot? I love the Bay Area, especially Berkeley. Has there been any major civic drama this summer there?

Thanks for the explaination. I too have low cash reserves as well as limited time. Like you, I derive a tremendous amount of joy investigating how things work (especially cars and computers). Limited cash has kepy my explorations to the computer realm, however. I often visit http://www.howstuffworks.com . They have a surprising store of articles for the layman.

I take it that you've lived in the Bay Area. The summer here is rather nice. We haven't had to suffer through any heat waves yet. Other than minor variations, the weather has stayed around 75 degrees.

The only major recent drama I remember is Clinton's visit to a local bookstore near the south side of the UC Berkeley campus (though it isn't really drama). School has been out for a while so not much has happened this summer.

I hope you're enjoying Oregon.

I've never lived in the Bay Area, just spent some time there when I was younger. As far as bein' broke, thats the story of my life brother. It's not because Im lazy, Ill tell you that. I work two jobs now, and spend about twelve hours a day at work. Plus I have a five year old daughter. So time is not something I got a lot of. Anyways, I think Im going to sort of change the focus for the group idea. Maybe pursue just doing a *nix user group, with a nip of coding. Maybe use Python, or Perl, or whatever everyone wants to look into, as another focus. Im talking about learning to code, as a side focus. Ive been studying Python for a few weeks, and I really enjoy it so far. So my vote would be for Python. But anyways, it would be fun to do the Linux For Scratch thing, then focus on learning to code, so maybe we could start an open source project. I put up some info and ideas on my site.
