this is one thing that i have bee wanting to know . what music do most of u listen to. i mainly listen to punk and metal not nu-metal but true metal like

SLAYER
DIMMU BORGIR
CRADLE OF FILTH
PANTERA
ARCH EMENY
LACUNA COIL

etc

then punk

MISFITS
RAMONES
BLACK FLAG
MINOR THREAT

the reason im asking this question is i have seen alot of linux users with screenshots of metal or punk or rock bands...... as well as one of my linux buddies is a dye heart cradle of filth fan.

geek linux users tend to stick to non mainstream music what i have seen. my teacher at college a linux geek was a huge punk fan

I have an MP3 car player, the latest disk is full of MegaDeth and Nine Inch Nails, two of my all time favorates.

Others would be Queensryche, Queen, Dokken, Godsmack, Metallica, Aerosmith, Alice in Chains, Faith No More, Guns n Roses, Iron Maiden, Motley Crue, Rush, Tesla and Tom Petty

So mostly older metal and hard rock.

Saw a survey a couple weeks ago where most Linux people fall into the Techno music groups and developers are metal heads :)

For me it would have to be mostly hard rock and punk:

Hard rock:
System of a Down
Three Days Grace
Static-X
Flaw
Disturbed
Linkin Park
P.O.D (new stuff)
Emery
Lost Prophets
Demon Hunter
Beloved
12 Stones

Punk:
Good Charlotte
Sum 41
Green Day (a little)
More that I can't think of:P

And I guess I can't leaave out the other more moderate stuff:

Switch Foot
Ataris
Something Corporate
Evanessence

Pretty good stuff:D

Although i detached myself from the techno scene many years ago i still like to listen to trance music, especially when sitting at my computer. Or just the radio for a mixture, not really got a style of music that i am into, just depends what mood i am in really.

Cheers :)

Fifteen years ago this would have been an easy question to answer. In my youth, I had a pretty narrow range of things that I liked. As I age though, I find myself considerably more receptive to different things. So I'm never listening to just one type of music anymore.

Sometimes I listen to Billie Holiday.
Sometimes Tom Waits.
Hell...sometimes I even listen to Johnny Cash.

But if you want to know what is near-and-dear to my heart, the stuff I can never give up it is this:

Cocksparrer
Sick of it All
Gorilla Biscuits
Agnostic Front
Cro-mags
Bad Brains

Anything too fast, too loud, too angry and pre-Nirvanna.

Radiohead
The Strokes
Modest Mouse
Nick Drake
Jeff Buckley
The Clash
Sex Pistols
White Stripes
Wilco
Built to Spill
Mercury Rev
The Flaming Lips
Jet
Neutral Milk Hotel

The list goes on and on and on...

Wow, I have very similar tastes in music to many of you:

I've always listened to punk:
Ramones, Clash, Billy Bragg, Screeching Weasel, NoFX, Rancid, Good Riddance, Dead Kennedys etc. Lately I've been enjoying stuff like Modest Mouse, Neutral Milk Hotel, Ugly Cassanova and Jane's Addiction. My musical tastes span from the techno/rap/trance/reggae fusion of the Sofa Surfers, to stuff like John Fahey, Joe Sitrani and the Beatles.

I'm weird... but I'm glad some people here share my musical tastes.

lupin_the_3rd, you just about listed off all the cds sitting on my desk... weird.

My musical tastes change frequently and often swing in completely new directions, so here are some of my favorite bands:

Apocalyptica
The Streets
Bright Eyes
Modest Mouse
Johnny Cash
Nine Inch Nails
Biz Markie
Queens of the Stone Age
Deerhoof
Don Caballero
Drums and Tuba

A Flock of Seagulls
The Beatles
Beastie Boys
Beck Bjork
Cake
the musical score from Donnie Darko
Tubular Bells - Mike Oldfield (the musical score from the exorcist)
The Cars
Reggae, any reggae will do
Classical Music, Mozart Bach Vivaldi Dvorak Schubert
RUSH!
Interpol
most Gregorian chant
most Tibetan Buddhist chant
Kosheen
Marilyn Manson
Moby
No Doubt
Red Hot Chili Peppers
They Might Be Giants

I usually go through a particualr band anywhere from one week to a couple months. Sometimes I'll listen to them again, sometimes I won't.

It's great to see some Megadeth fans 'round these parts. I don't think there are many of us around anymore. :( And, of course, Sepultura and oldschool Metallica are untouchable.

My top groups would be They Might Be Giants, Tool, Helmet, KMFDM, Nature/Brian Threatt, Killing Joke, Jethro Tull, and Radiohead.

I especially enjoy: Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Soundgarden, The Who, CCR, Tool, A Perfect Circle, Foo Fighters, Neil Young, Ozzy, AC/DC, Metallica, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Pete Townsend solo. Though lately I've been hearing good things from the likes of Cradle of Filth, Superjoint Ritual, and Jet. Not quite sure of those bands yet, but Superjoint ritual has Phil Anselmo who is cool as hell. Oh, and anything from Headbanger's Ball.

I must say I have a severe dislike, borderline hatred, for all things hip-hop and rap.

Well I have broad tastes but I'm really into Black metal. Gorgoroth, Satyricon, Emperor, early-Dimmu Borgir, Vintersorg. I also like a lot of goth like middle-My Dying Bride, middle-Anathema, Katatonia, Moonspell, Cure. I like punk from the frist british wave dead boys, sex pistols, clash, uk subs, exploited, and pop-punk/emo/screamo. By far my favourtie is grunge even lesser known bands like Screaming Trees and Mudhoney or L7.

Then otherwise depending on my mood:

Lynyrd Skynyrd
Zeppelin

Yes
Pink Floyd
Gov't Mule
Bowie
Tom Petty
Steely Dan
The Cars
Talking Heads
The Doors
The Police
The Who
ZZ Top

Quick Google search says that's right...How is his solo stuff compared to that of Mr. Bungle or Faith No More?

All VERY different.

Mr. Bungle was his first band, first album playing "avant-guard-circus-metal", second album was abstract something or other, cant describe it, you just have to listen, and third album described as "the beach boys on crack".

Solo stuff was vocalization as an instrument, and a lot of other stuff I just cant describe.

Faith No More was a keyboard-rock 80s band that evolved into a hardrock then metal band that inspired many bands like System of a Down, Korn, Deftones, and many many others. Most of the nu-metal bands nowadays completely lift portions of songs made by Faith no More 10 years ago, before such a genre even existed. Not that Im a nu-metal fan, but credit where credit is due.

I really cant properly desribe a lick of it. Just give it all a listen, its all VERY different. Even within bands from album to album its a HUGE change.

I listen to a wide range, mostly pop stuff and some country (new-age, meaning the twangs cut down; the twang bugs me but I like the lyrics of some of the songs).
If I am relaxing I generally listen to music with lyrics I like, meaning it's probably easy going lubby dubby crap; or it's depressive music (depending on if I got dumped or well ;) ;) recently). Favorite band, Evanescence.

If I am coding, it's all instrumental usually. I have several hours of classical just because I find it soothing and it helps me concentrate. Try changing your music around when you code, find something that never interrupts you and keeps you awake and a little edgy; that's what I've found helps most for making it quick and enjoyable. You might also try turning the music off.

And btw, rhythmbox rocks...

Some of my faves are:
Aphex Twin
Orb
Boards of Canada
Slowdive
808State
Autechre
FSOL
etc etc etc; yeah I like techno
I like lots of rock too
(My Bloody Valentine, Sonic Youth, Velvet Underground..)
Love Jazz; Dizzy Gillespie, T Monk, Duke Ellington..
Like Classical, particularly late romantic stuff(Debussy, Ravel, Chopin, Rachmaninoff...or really early Baroque stuff.
I like the Blues, not really into Country tho. Really like Hip-hop, but only the real stuff; not that top40 junk.
Yeah, pretty much most genres I like. Lets not forget punk, metal, reggae...I'm an open-minded guy. What don't I like? Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake and that kind of ilk. They kinda remind me of the MiniPops, yuck.:)

Loki3: Satriani is so good that it hurts. I love music that challenges me as a listener. I just sit around saying, "How did he do that?!"

timothykaine & Icarus: If you're interested in Mike Patton, check out Fantomas if you haven't already done so. No set rhythm, time signature, melody, or lyrics. And Dave Lombardo is a god.

I'm really surprised/disappointed that there aren't more They Might Be Giants fans on here. I sorta expected the one of the world's biggest geek bands to be beloved among, well, geeks. ;) Unfortunately, I'm just a nerd, but I'm an aspiring geek. :D

On one listen through, I could go from Garth Brooks to Eminem over to Neil Sedaka, and then right back to Rob Zombie. ;) Keeps life interesting.

Like I said...everything.

And, as for this comment...

NOTE: Opera is not music, but it is a pretty good browser.
Now, that's a close-minded comment to make. Many people enjoy opera every year. You just have to find some of the better stuff. (Yes, just like any music, there is "good opera" and "bad opera.") If you don't like the music, though, don't say "it's not music." Just don't say anything at all. :p

I just found out that MegaDeth has a new album coming out Sept. 14th!
I did not realize that Dave recovered so quickly from his accedent and is able to play again. The band got back together (same line up from The World Needs a Hero)

I finally have something to look forward to with new music, this and Nine Inch Nails coming out with new stuff this fall... :D

Chris Isaak
Coal Chamber
Default
Deftones
Dire Straits
Drowning Pool
Incubus
Korn
Kosheen

Morphine - Not mentioned either! They're brilliant!
Nelly Furtado
Nickelback
Panic Cell
Rage Against The Machine
Sepultura
Sneaker Pimps
Soulfly
Soundgarden
Spineshank
Staind
Theory Of A Deadman
Weezer

That concludes my exhaustive list. :)

I can add one to your count :) They're my second favorite band behind Collective Soul. I'll try to keep this list short :p My top three are numbered, the others change order depending on my mood, and lately that's been leaning toward Nightwish/Van Halen.

1. Collective Soul
2. TMBG
3. Aerosmith

E.S. Posthumus, Steely Dan, Nightwish, Tom Petty, Offspring, Ben Folds / BFF, Billy Joel, Bloodhound Gang, Boston, Def Leppard, Dire Straits, Eric Clapton, Goo Goo Dolls, Guns N' Roses, Poison, Van Halen, Ratt, Saigon Kick, Talking Heads, Spacehog, Weird Al, Whitesnake, Widespread Panic

Well that list was longer than I wanted to make it, but I can't leave any of these bands out, and this is still a cut down list. As you can see, it's mostly classic rock. I tend to avoid all R&B like the plague, ditto really intense heavy metal and techno.

Cro-mags
Bad Brains

I also listen to every now and again Beatblender one of the somafm stations.

I Like a lot of old school Hip hip but new Rap and Hip hop is just really crap these days IMO.

At the not quite terribly young age of 47, I think that I am finally finally at long last somewhat sick of the music that I've been listening to for the last thirty years. The Rolling Stones have a new album. Twenty years ago, I would have bought it the first day it appeared in the stores, but this time I downloaded the tracks on gnutella, listened to one cut, (it wasn't bad) and then didn't even bother to save the tracks before reformatting my hard drive to dual install Fedora with Debian.

So what do I listen to? These days, I don't actually listen to music very much. At any given moment I'm more likely to be listening to the news on NPR or commentary on Air America Radio. When I want music, I'll listen to the local classical music station or http://www.kcrwmusic.com/, which is a great station for middle-aged people like me who find themselves looking for something smart, eclectic, and fresh.

Oh, and I've been listening to Devo quite a bit lately. Don't ask me what THAT'S about, I have no idea.

I like a huge range of music. My favourite is Rock, bands like Terrorvision, The Wildhearts, Therapy. I also DJ bassline house/speed garage, at pubs and clubs. I like folk/rock like The Levellers and Billy Bragg. I also really like reggae, particularly Bob Marley.

I go to about 7 music festivals a year and see almost every style at those, and make a point just to wander round smaller stages at most, where I can catch bands that I've never heard of, as I love anything new/different.

I don't like indie (i.e. depressing bands like Coldplay/Travis), RnB and Rap, they all make me feel worse than I did before hearing them, and this isn't why I listen to music.

That's really cool! Skillet is pretty awesome. (They are Christian Rock)
A girl I went to high school with dated the bass player from Cinderella when she lived in New Jersey, and my cousin waited on Guns'n'Roses at a BK in Houlton, Maine when they were on their way to Moncton, NB for a concert. It was a few months before the "Welcome to the Jungle" single was released, and they were all together in a crappie old van and didn't have any roadies or anything.

This is amazing, I thought I was relatively alone in liking both Johnny Cash and metal.

Not too long ago, I saw an interview with Iggy Pop, who mentioned JC as one of his all-time favorites. That Folsom Prison album is pretty amazing stuff, especially the uncensored rerelease. I don't think a country music star would do such a thing today. It would be politically incorrect, cause they might be seen as "soft on crime".

Jata The Nine Inch Nails remake of Hurt by Johnny Cash kicks *** ;-)

Let me just say that Sum 41, Green Day, and Good Charlotte are not punk. they are technically categorized as pop-rock. a better example of Punk is Anti-Flag and the Dead Kenedys

however, I do not like pop-rock OR punk. here's what I listen to:

Bands:
Tool
Metallica (everything before "St. Anger")
A Perfect Circle
Staind (Dysfunction and Tormented Only)
Nine Inch Nails (Yes, all 14 albums...or are there more? lol)
Disturbed (though I dislike "The Sickness" album, "Believe" kicks ***)
Slipknot (I mostly dislike "The Subliminal Verses")
Match Box 20
Goo Goo Dolls

I often listen to a playlist of my favorite video game music from:
Star Craft
Doom
Arcanum
Unreal (No, NOT Tournament)
Diablo (Yes, there was a Diablo 1)
Quake 3
Quake 2
I've even got Zelda and Mario in the mix

Some Crazy Stuff:
Filter - Trip Like I Do
Slayer - Behidn the Crooked Cross
Slayer - Bloodline
Tonic - The Way She Loves Me
Blues Traveler - Hook, and The Run Around
Eagles - Hotel California
Kansas - Carry On My WAyward Son
Joe Walsh - err... title?
Tom Cochran - Life is a Highway

I'm pretty big into Rock (mostly Alternative/Indie), but I've been getting into Electronic lately (mostly Downtempo and Ambient). I also enjoy select songs from Country, Classical, and a few other genres too.

My most favorite bands are:
Black Lab
Dashboard Confessional
Fuel
Eagles
Better than Ezra
Foo Fighters
U2
Live
Prime STH
Yellowcard
... the list goes on.

What I'm really big into now is the (paid) online music services, specifically Yahoo's Music Unlimited (I know, it's windows-only, DRM is evil, blah blah blah. I love it though).

When Linux is in charge of the jukebox I'm ALWAYS tuned into ShoutCast (http://www.shoutcast.com). Specifically SomaFM's Secret Agent (http://www.somafm.com) channel. If you have XMMS, I suggest you tune in; it's SAUCY!

Thats an interesting perspective. I like to view it as Art versus Entertainment. "50 Cent" is an entertainer. Tool are artists.

Whether art is good or not is also subjective. But skill is absolute. You may or may not like Yngwie Malmsteen, but his skill cannot be denied. Plenty of guitarists don't like his style because they think it's vulgar, but they would all like to be capable of hammering off 16 strokes pr. second on their own "Clapton-esque" Fender stratocaster.

That said. technicality can also be an art in itself. Like architechture. Check out the samples on necrophagist.com - especially the track "stabwound", and you'll get the point. Whether their musical style appeals to an individual entirely preferring another genre is irrelevant, as their skill is objectively superior.

All Linux users into extreme music one way or the other, should check out the samples on their site. It's brain metal taken to the extreme, almost Cynic (the band) heights.
