Any new shooters out?

I've basically looked at most of the loki games like Enemy Territory and America's Army and all. I'm looking for a new first person shooter similar to either of those, but can't find any. Any to recommend?

Ive spent most of my gametime in Wolfie, ET, UT2K4, and Vice City.

I really wish Transgaming could get EA games going. I can get all my C&C games running up until EA bought em out so I cant play Generals. :( I also want to play NHL. Those are two of my favorite games, along with Enemy Territory.

Americas Army sucks, but Im another damn Seattle hippy protester so that has a double meaning. Im serious about both meanings though. heh

Not new but Quake 3 and a lot of its mods(Urban Terror is my fav) run on linux, and quite nicely too.

I've been playing Unreal Tournament a lot, which is cool.

Have you seen Cube, the Open Source 3d shooter? (website down at the moment, but plenty of articles about it online)

That's the list I meant. And my computer probably won't be able to handle Doom3. The graphics alone are WAY too much for my pc to handle. I'll be sure to check out Rune and Postal2 though.

Maybe not, have you seen the requirements for Doom3 for Windows? Unless you have less machine then me, you can run it

• A 1.5-gigahertz Intel Pentium 4 chip or AMD Athlon 1500.
• 384 megabytes of memory.
• Two gigabytes of hard drive space.
• An nVidia GeForce 3 graphics card or better; or an ATI Technologies 8500 or better.

And knowing how well Quake3 ran on my 16MB Voodoo Banshee card when it came out, id are the best graphics/hardware optimizers in the world!

Of course, you may not be able to run it at a high resolution or detail level with that hardware (likely not), but you ought to still be able to run it.

Which is why I'm trying to find one of BFG's GeForce 6800 GT OC cards somewhere -- everywhere I can find one online is already sold out. :(

Thanks, but that's not the GT card, it's the plain old 6800 card (the one with only 12 shader pipelines, instead of the 16 that the GT and Ultra cards have).

The issue, at least according to some random tech at NWCA (http://www.nwca.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=products.showDetail&header=Brands&subheader=&productID=1443&flag=Standalone), is that BFG and/or nVidia didn't have nearly enough of these GPUs or cards to meet the demand for them. Which I can understand -- the card is basically the same as an Ultra, just with a slightly lower clock speed. And BFG's version is already overclocked by 20MHz or so (GPU wise). Overclocking it another 30MHz on the GPU and 50MHz on the memory (which is DDR, so 100MHz effective) turns it into almost exactly the same card as the Ultra variant, just with a LOT lower power consumption. Which is why everybody wants one (plus it's $100 cheaper).

I heard that they wern't going to release a linux version of Doom3 but, instead they were going to release just the windows version and offical linux binarys would have to be downloaded off the id site.

But I could be totaly wrong.

i'm waiting for someone i knows download to finish to see if the linux version is on the ISO, if it is i am going to buy the box, if not i'm wating till they release the Linux binarys, then buying the boxed version whenever it comes out over here,

How about doing a little research to see that it's not shipping with Linux binaries (http://www.webdog.org/plans/6/) but they will be downloadable when they are ready...

i've read loads, it's split about 50/50 saying that it's boxed and not, so i figured this guys downloading it i'll ask him, not my business if he pirates games nor is it a crime asking someone what the pirated copy contains.

(btw thanks for the link to the official thing, people have said that it confirmed the boxed version ffs!)

when the linux binarys are out, i will buy the game, but it sucks having to wait until it's out in europe, ehy the hell cant they just ship it over!

i hate it when my freinds in america finish the game before i start it (i'm sure some of you know that feeling)

I do hear you on not being able to find valid information on it, it's all about the Windows baby! :p

Heck, they released hardware tweaking guides last week for it, but not a single mention of Linux.

At least this news bit was posted by Todd 2 weeks ago and has been mirrored several times over ;)

My wife found out about the 'soon to be released' date and asked if I was going to pull a UT2003/UT2004 and get it on the release date...I told here once the binaries are available, that is the release date I pick up the game :D

You don't gotta wait for your friend, I can tell you rigt right none of the 3 disc contain anything to do with linux. The first disc is simply the setup files and the other two are the pak files

Accualy from what i've heard it will run on "halfway decent" videocards and still maintain a pretty good framerate but, you just wont beable to run the game
with amazing detail.

with as little programs and servers running possible, even going into fluxbox or ratpoison

run glxgears and leave it for a few seconds, it should print out the correct framerate in the terminal after a few seconds


Useless Tip: you get a great framerate with the game minimized!!!!!!!!!

With just a console up in KDE, that game gave me these figures....


4063 frames in 5.0 seconds = 812.600 FPS
4643 frames in 5.0 seconds = 928.600 FPS
4475 frames in 5.0 seconds = 895.000 FPS
4462 frames in 5.0 seconds = 892.400 FPS
4471 frames in 5.0 seconds = 894.200 FPS

I meet everything but the GForce 3, because I have a GForce 2 MX/MX 400. Do you guys think It will still work?

No, sorry.

That GF3 requirement is a hard minimum, I believe.

Even if it's not, the GF2 MX card is MUCH slower than any GF3 (it's a great deal slower than the old GF2 non-MX cards, which are noticeably slower than the GF3). Stay away from MX cards, is my recommendation -- and that includes the FX5200 (which is based on the GF4 MX core, and is actually slower than a GF3 Ti500, so it likely won't run D3 either -- or at least, not well, even at 640x480 and lowest detail).

There's a reason these cards are $40 or $50... it's because they're crap. Sorry, but it's the truth. :(

Oh well, it's the card that came with the computer so I'm not complaining. It runs all the other games fine. I dont plan on spending a bunch of money just to play one game.

Im using a GeForce FX 5200 Ultra (mind you, ultra is NOT the version based on the GFMX like the regular 5200 is) and it runs, but its choppy. I really cant describe how intense the graphics are. Think about if the Final Fantasy movie were interactive.... It almost looks that good on high detail, but my framerates SUCK.

I'm curuious where you get all your information about witch card has witch core or is based off another and what not....

Is there a big table of video card information somewhere or have you just gathered all this over time? Beacuse it think it would me kool to know all of this stuff :D
