Type su to become root and then run that command.

i thought you needed the root passwd for that,

but i know that under the kde menu there is a knoppix menu and in that there is a root access term.

By default, Knoppix doesn't have a root password (when booted from CD). Thus, by default a simple "su" with no argument is sufficient to become root. Also, the default user is a "sudo-er", so it's also possible to type in:

sudo knoppix-installer

When installing, there are three different options for the style of installation. I recommend the old fashioned Debian style. It doesn't feature the automatic hardware detection of the other styles, but this also gives you full flexibility to tweak your system. In particular, the automatic hardware detection might not take full advantage of your video card's hardware acceleration capabilities.

Think one needs to go to the command prompt to do the installation.

Coming off GUI by pressing Crtl+Alt+F1

No, the installer uses GUI menus, as well as the GUI partition manager QTParted.

actually it works in the text mode too.
Thats how I installed it on my test machine.

If you want to use the gui version goto: Start (The K button) -> Knoppix -> Root shell.

Or you can also use sudo root to become root and then install.

Hope this helps.

yes it helps but about the old fashion debian style installation, does it come with all the software apps of knoppix or do i have to download all of them again?

What you do is: Open a root shell.
To do this, click on the second icon on the left bottom screen (the pinguin) there you should find root shell.

Change in this shell the password. (passwd)

and start the gui again.
