I installed Mandrake about 2 weeks ago. Since then , I have done complete installs of DOS and SuSE. I completely reformatted the hard drive. Now I discovered that the Mandrake splash images still appear during bootup. Why won't it go away?

formatting a HD wont touch the master boot record.
Most likely, Mandrake installed the bootloader (lilo or grub) on the MBR, and maybe this is why you have a mandrake 'bootsplash'. Can you boot into DOS and SUSE?

fdisk /mbr [at least this works with a windows dos boot disk]
mandrake uses lilo.

Hi fat Trav,
First Just say hello to you as you were among the first to answer my first post.
Secondly just mention my Mandrake 9.2 uses Grub, pressumably it could be selectable.
Thirdly never thought a splash image can hide in MBR. I would put it down to incomplete formatting.

Here's the order of the installs:
1. Installed Mandrake
2. Installed DOS (I did use fdisk /mbr so that it would boot to DOS)
3. Failed install of Windows 3.11
4. Reinstalled DOS
5. Installed SuSE 9.1 from FTP (I installed Lilo, but no the bootsplash graphics)
At no one time was more than one OS installed.
That's weird- what's in the global section of your lilo.conf file?

is the mandrake image still there? i'm confused here...
i had mandrake 10 on my test box and then installed slack 10 on it...full reformat (/, /boot, mbr) and the image was gone.

You can also use grub with it.

Yup... It is a selectable option during installation.

yes but lilo is the default. unless you change it, mandrake will use lilo.
