I've tried many times, and the only way I got it to sync (some time ago) was as root. Unfortunately, it then ate most of my Palm's Address Book categories (bizarre) and would never sync again. I've also tried running Pilot-Link as an alternative via the terminal command "pilot-link," but my box says it can't find any executables. I tried working on this problem with some folks at the SuSE forums, but there hasn't been a response in several days now: http://forums.suselinuxsupport.de/index.php?showtopic=2134

If anyone could help me out here, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Check the permission on the device you are trying to connect to. Probably why only root could do it. If you are connecting to /dev/ttyUSB1, then make sure you have full permissions for that device. man chmod if you need to find out more about changing permissions. Also, after you hit the sync button on the palm, type dmesg in a command line, and post the output. What software are you trying to sync with? go here for great documentation: www.pilot-link.org.

Thanks a lot for the dmesg tip. It recognized the device on ttyUSB3, so I changed my jpilot preferences and it went off without a hitch. :)
