I was thinking about upgrading my fedora core 1 installation to core 2....would it upgrade the kernel, kde, and other software during the installation? Also would I lose all of my setting and files like my desktop and stuff?

i believe it will only upgrade programs (kernel, gnome, kde, stuff like that) but would leave most of your files (/home ?) untouched.

honestly, FC2 is pretty buggy and unstable. i'd recommend mandrake instead. or try suse, both are quite nice.

Ok i'll stick with FC1 till most of the bugs are out of FC2, and just upgrade my kernel on FC1.

I used apt-get to update just about everything and rolled my own kernels from kernel.org when I ran FC1.

I'd still recommend a different distro other than Fedora Core. (FC is only a testing distro for RedHat)

apt.freshrpms.net --> apt-get for rpm systems

on a side note, if you are worried about your files being over written, i'd back up everything onto one of your drives and then partition your system so you have separate /home and / partitions. this way u can do fresh installs or any linux distro and keep all your settings and files on a separate partition.

i have partitions for /boot, /, /home and /media <movies, mp3s, and the like>. it makes things a lot easier

well i just formated on of my harddrives for fat32 for my music, etc. but it says my kernel doesn't support fat32. Could you tell me how to add support then i won't have to worry about anything cause i just want all my music and other stuff cause i have around 20gbs worth.

you will need to recompile your kernel for fat support.
there is enough information on this forum and google.com/linux to get you started on kernel compiling. it's not that hard

specifically, you need to look for FileSystems and then put a Yes or M (Module) for Dos Fat Fs, and M for VFAT Support.

have fun!
