My sound is working fine, it's just when I bootup i get this horrific tone from my speakers, and it doesn't shut off after I get into etiher KDE or GNOME. . .
It started when I did alsaconf and it said it was going to play a sound. . . Well it certianly did play one, everytime I boot now!
ARG!!!
(it scared a few patrons, too). . .

I had something very similar happen to me. I ran alsamixer, from a root login, and turned the AC'97 volume down to 0.

ok, that's all fine and dandy
but how do I save the mixer settings so I don't have to turn it down evertime I boot . . ?
