I made another thread about my resolution, and it was fixed...Thanks for the help on that one. Now I am trying to get my Uniwill 82801 DB AC'97 modem to work. I tried /dev/modem ACtty01 - 03 and SSY 01- 03, and it still doesn't detect the modem. I don't know what's wrong, because it automatically says the make/model (Uniwill etc).. What's the deal? I have the phone line plugged in, and I tried the other ones; what can I do next?

Is that a Winmodem? If so, you should check out linmodems.org (http://linmodems.org). From what I've heard, Winmodems are a pain in the a**.

I don't understand how it would be a winmodem, if my laptop says "Linux Certified" and I paid 1,700 for it so I wouldn't have to deal with this. The computer is a LC2410, and it worked before, but now that I reinstalled SuSE 9.0 (wiped everything clean) I can't get it to work. It's a Uniwill 82801 DC AC'97.

It detects it, usually it doesn't detect winmodems (like Mandrake 9.2 didn't on my 733 downstairs), I just can't figure out why it won't work.

Found this site on by googling for "82801 modem"

Here's an excerpt:
During installation this device is detected but not fully configured. The user has to install and configure the SmartLink modem driver. This is done by using Yast to install the driver package from SuSE CD 4 (or DVD) and running the smartlink configuration tool in a console or shell.

Does this help?

I found the right package, installed correctly with yast, then ran the configuration as root. I ran configure, and it was set up properly, but when I tried to run it as ttySL0 it says (no such device). What the heck am I doing wrong?

Under the readme it says
"Using the modem.
Installation will automatically create character tty device entry '/dev/ttySL0' with major number 212 anmd symbolic link '/dev/modem'.
Use one of them as modem device for your dialing application.

I tried /dev/modem and it says "modem is busy"

I tried /dev/TTYSL0 and says no such device...Any ideas?

You got me.

Looking at the readme (http://www.smlink.com/main/down/linux_instructions.txt) for the driver shows that you need to have the module slamrmo loaded. This should be taken care of automatically, but you could try modprobe-ing it.
