Hey all,
Having trouble setting up my DSL on Linux. Here's the scoop:
My system is attached to a DSL router (ActionTech), via cat 5 cable, which is in turn attached to another computer, and that is connected via phone line to the wall. When I go into Gnome to st up the network, I choose xDSL, enter my name, password, etc. The wizard chooses my eth0 for the device. But when I go to activate, it lists ppp0 as the device, and says that the devce is not configured. Previously, the ppp0 was used for a regular modem, and worked fine. BTW, my DSL connection does work in another OS I have on my system. HELP--I'm clueless!

I'm not sure I understand your setup correctly, but this is the picture I'm getting from what you've said so far:
Linux box-------
Broadband Router-----DSL Modem-----Line
Other box-------
Or am I waaaaay off-base?

That is an odd setup, you're modem goes through another computer before it gets to the outside line? I'm curious how the other OS works with this setup

Sometimes I've seen the older Red Hat's continuously (and aggressivly) try to use an older config, even if it's not valid or modified. Have you updated all the available packages for RH9? Also, have you tried starting a new connection manually through the network GUI you have been using?
BTW, my DSL connection does work in another OS I have on my system. *giggle* what OS could that be!? :D
I'm still curious how you have this setup working...
computer -> DSL modem -> computer (firewall?) -> outside line
Did I get that order correct?

EnigmaOne, your diagram is exactly how I have it set up. I was incorrect in saying my system connects through another computer; rather both computers connect to the DSL router. I did remove the old ppp0 adapter from the GUI network. How do you "manually" set up the connection?

I really don't have experience with your particular brand of broadband router, but I'm assuming that you can configure the router with your username/password combination, and have it login automatically to your ISP account.
My dad has such a setup through SBC, and we set him up this way with a Linksys BB router.
I added a connection keep-alive time to his configuration, and have his computers soliciting the router for their local IP addys, as well as gateway-ing to the BB router.
I think he's been running this way for about 8 months without a problem.
Check your router manual for the particulars on how to accomplish this in their configuration screens.

That's simular to how I have my network setup, but I have 3 computers and 1 Wireless Access Point connected to a switch, which is uplinked to the modem then to the line
The Swiych is a Linksys Cable/DSL Router and has an option in the setup to automaticly connect when requested. All I needed to do was put in the logon/password in the Router and nothing else. Works great with almost no problems.
What is your Router? Check it's manual for configuration options, as this would make your life so much better!

I'm guessing that he has either of these, or something very close to them:
