I noticed when I double click a .txt file or .png file or something, it just opens up right in the nautilus browser.. then on the left I can click a button to open it in some other app (eye of gnome, etc). How can I simply choose a default app for a filetype, so when I double-click a file, it opens with that app? And how do I set an icon .png file for all files of a certain type?

in the gnome control center, you do this in Advanced, File Types and Programs

Hmm, weird.. I chose Eye of Gnome as default action, and set viewer component to "none" (so it wouldn't show in the nautilus browser). It didn't seem to do anything though, it still showed up in the nautilius browser window. I'd like it to basically run "eog %s".. so it comes up in a new window.

PS: I'm using the always_browser preference in nautilus.. I hate having a dozen windows open..
