Currently, I have a dual boot system with WinXP and FC1. I use Thunderbird for email from my FC1 partition. I want to upgrade to FC2 (and I am okay with getting rid of the WinXP partition). My basic question - and forgive my newbieness - is how can I upgrade to FC2 while keeping my mail, addressbooks and settings intact for Thunderbird?

When I upgraded from Mandrake 9.2 to Mandrake 10.0 all it did was look through the packages and compare version numbers. If Mandrake 10 had a newer package it installed it. My user settings were all left alone. I assume this is the same for Fedora.

I'd check there website for information on upgrading. Generally, it shouldn't touch your files or settings. Double check with Fedora's website and then backup just in case.

easy answer: back you /home/$USER/.thunderbird

tar it up, or something, then burn it do a cd, or put it on another linux box for storage (everone has three linux boxes in their home office, right? :D ). in short, back it up someway so it doesn't get deleted on the FC2 install.

BTW, FC2 isn't the best distro around. I've tried it and never found it to be stable so I'd have to recommend doing a fresh install and not an upgrade. I'd recommend using Mandrake 10 or FC1 instead of FC2. But if you really want to use FC2, you must read this article (http://lwn.net/Articles/86835/) if you want to be able to boot into either Windows or fedora core 2.
