I want to be able to start a new X session which takes me to the graphical login screen (not a new session for the current user) like the Start New Session button in KDE start menu, but when not using KDE (or Gnome, presuming Gnome has a simliar shortcut somewhere)........

startx -- :1 launches a new session for the same user, and without letting me choose the windowmanager, man startx didn't give me any clues...

TIA

First- what distro are you using? Are you saying you don't want to use kdm or gdm, the kde and gnome display managers? There's xdm also, though I'm not sure if you can choose which sessoin you want.

If you have KDE or GNOME, why don't you just login as root and type kdm or gdm in and then choose your session?

Need more information...

Also, have you tried (re)setting your default x session?

I'm using mdk10 and have started using windowlab as a nice minimal WM...I want to add a command to menu to start a new session

Now, i really don't know windowlab, but...

Depending on your

~/.windowlab/menurc

And put :

Log out:exit && your window manager

I don't know if it'll work, but it's worth a try...

thanks, but I don't want to log out then in again, I want to launch a new session...startx -- :1 does this for me but bypasses the login screen, so it's always a new session for the same user

uh... ok, well then it beats me. The only thing I can suggest is looking up whether or not the command can be used for the display manager or not.

Have you tried Google? Maybe there's something there...
