Okedoke, I have installed Mandrake 10 a few times this week. I have Windows XP Pro on other computer. I have configured a very basic Samba share file. I casn see the shares and access them from the Windows PC. But I cannot see the Xp shares on the Linux machine. I can ping each other.
Ican move files into and out of the shares on the Linux machine. I just cant see the shares on the XP computer form Linux. When I enter the Mandrake Control center and click on Mount points, samba, then click Searhc , It comes back with the Samba server, I cliick on the Samba server and it shows my shares for the samba server but they are not mounted. I CANNOT see the Windows pc. But the funny thing is when I attempt to mount the Samba servers I can see it wont let me?
Plz any help would be great.

If I read this correctly (good chance I didn't, busy day for me :)), you don't need Samba setup on your Linux machine to view shares on other machines...but you do need smbclient

Can you ping the Windows machine by IP address? if so try
smbclient -L //ipaddress

That would list all available shares on that machine.

Icarus: might want to re-read it.

Personally though, no clue. I've always hated with dealing with samba, and more often than not, my solution has always been wait an hour and watch it magically work then.
