I heard somewhere that you can run KDE but with a different window manager than the default KDE window manager. I don't really get this. How do you do this and why would you want to do this?

You would want to do this because you could then use openbox (or something else) for window decorations, you can then customize much more what your windows look like.
I've never used kde - so sorry, I can't help you with how to do it.

how about starting anyother WM and then just run "startkde"?
