I think you can actually forward your desktop using an ssh connection. I can't think up a good forum search for you on this one. But I am sure it is covered here some where. I know there are apps for windows and linux and unix to accomplish all of this. (guess I shouldn't try to answer forum posts after a couple of beers.) duncanbojangles 06-20-2004, 10:58 PM Are you sure you need the graphical desktop? If you could do what you need with just the command line, then you could ssh or telnet into your box and work it from wherever you are. But, if you need the graphics, then the X server on your linux box can do that. If you're connecting to your linux box from a Windows machine, then you'll need an X server on your Windows computer. It's pretty much the same the other way around, too. But it would just be simpler if you could just use the command line. sploo22 06-20-2004, 11:14 PM Originally posted by duncanbojangles If you're connecting to your linux box from a Windows machine, then you'll need an X server on your Windows computer. It's small too - the Windows server and client together are just 700K. tmcG 06-21-2004, 03:04 AM Expanding on the suggestion of VNC, you can also tunnel VNC through SSH on Windows I am currently doing this using OpenSSH (http://sshwindows.sourceforge.net/) and Ultr@VNC (http://ultravnc.sourceforge.net/) (Notice I use open surce even on Windows!!;)) mrBen 06-21-2004, 04:11 AM I am doing likewise with PuTTY and TightVNC. blobaugh 06-21-2004, 07:00 AM VNC runs great if you are viewing a linux box. It's nice and fast. The slowdown happens when you view windows though. Still fast on my network though Taqwus 06-21-2004, 08:42 PM Is it possible to get gnome to come up in vnc instead of the one that just gives me an xterm AdamZ 06-21-2004, 11:42 PM type gnome-session in the xterm, or you can put it in a file somewhere (read the manpage) justlinux.com
