I reinstalled Fedora and now I have KDE in addition to Gnome. Problem: I can not figure out how to start it. Please, help

from command line try switchdesk kde, then startx

Or in gnome, there is a desktop switching gui somewhere.

Also, if you boot to init5, the session option at the bottom will list the windows managers you can pick from.

Thank you for help!

I tried the first option and got an error. Thit is what I did:

[vasily@localhost vasily]$ switchdesk kde
Red Hat Linux switchdesk 4.0
Copyright (C) 1999-2004 Red Hat, Inc
Redistributable under the terms of the GNU General Public License
Desktop now set up to run KDE.
For system defaults, remove /home/vasily/.Xclients
[vasily@localhost vasily]$ startx

Fatal server error:
Server is already active for display 0
If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock
and start again.

was gnome running at the time?

try this:

from command line type
init 3

this will bring x down.

Then do
switchdesk kde
startx

and kde should start for you

I got next:

[vasily@localhost vasily]$ init3
bash: init3: command not found
[vasily@localhost vasily]$ init 3
bash: init: command not found
[vasily@localhost vasily]$

Thank you in advance! I know how to use Windows, but these are my first steps in The Linux

you have to be root to do the init 3 command:

from command line in xwindows:

su -
(type root password)
init 3 (x goes down)
(login as user at prompt)
switchdesk kde
startx

Good luck

Why has everybody tried the hard way?

does the graphical login screen include kde? if it does, just logout for gnome and choose kde in the sessions at the bottom of the screen in the graphical login screen.

Those commands they gave require root access and require restarting of X!

right.....my 3rd option in my first reply was to do that.

Since they kept asking, I kept answering.

And a very good reason for you to read as much of your distros (Fedora & Redhat) documentation as you can. Only way to learn.
