I've read alot on this subject and every suggestion that I've read has failed to get me further....

So I post :D

I've recompiled the 2.6.6 kernel on another machine and moved the kernel-image*.deb file over and installed it on the machine that I want the new kernel on. Both distros are debian sarge and are both up to date.

the error comes up with the following and hangs

VFS Cannot open root device hda7 or unknown block.
Please append a correct boot option

A few lines above this code I read this error:

Ramdisk Driver
XD: out of memory

I dont know what to blame this on but I could really use the help.

I'm having to rebuild the kernel to so I can get the nVidia drivers to install as I understand the 2.6.6 kernel has some configs that the driver doenst like.

Thanks

If you built the kernel on a different machine, did you specify the correct options (architecture etc.) for the target?

Is hda7 the same root device as the previous kernel? Did you create a initrd (initial ramdisk) if you selected the filesystem support to be build as a module instead of in the kernel?
