My g/f and I came back from a nice weekend of camping last week (Victoria day weekend in Canada here) to find that our home had been burglarized. The thief in question had already made off with our DVD player, PS2 and about 30 DVDs. All three of the computer systems here were all disconnected and ready to go as well. Lucky we came back a day early! I'd be a basketcase without my systems!

Well, it turns out that the thief in question lives in the other half of our duplex and came through our ajoined attic. We have no concrete proof of this except that people around the neighbourhood have come forward to say that the person in question had been trying to sell our stuff to them. No one will testify though as he has threatened to kill anyone who says anything. (what a nice neighbourhood we live in, eh?) Apparently he's an ex-con with a history of break and enter charges.

My question to the group is how I should go about reinforcing security around our place. I've picked up a webcam that I plan to use for security although I'd love to hear any ideas on how I can set it up to upload pics to an outside server on a regular basis.

We've gone and refitted all doors with double keyed locks. We've been toying around with the idea of leaving bear traps under the attic opening too hehe I've already partially sealed it but drywall only allows for so much security.

Any thoughts?

Trust me, the baseball bat idea has already been brought up but this guy is a little psycho and I've got a g/f to protect.

The police say that they need proof before they can do anything.

Also, he has no clue as of yet that we know it was him.

Thanks.

A geographical cure would be best- and report your findings to the landlord and tell them you are moving because of the situation- economics is a good motive for business people to change things.

I almost forgot, you could move to Toronto, there's a linux guy there with a nice computer set-up, home theater in HDTV, and he would be available for questions on using linux. Some eccentric behavior may be noted but I hope he is harmless. :)

Actually, I was living up in Toronto up until spring of last year. Very fun place although the cost of living there was unreal hehe. Just noticed MDwatt's post regarding the meeting there. SHame I'm a 3 hour drive away now. :(

:D

I hope it's not who I'm thinking of. Stay away (far away) from that one. Eccentric? Downright batty!!

*cough* girls are welcome.

Syngin... Sorry to hear that. Have you involved the police in this matter? I would no matter what the neighbors had to say. The cops should be able to find some sort of proof.

BTW - the get together has been posponed for now as Choozo does not feel it would be all that great with just the two of us (HC been telling tales about me behind my back? :) ) of which I agree. Pity some of the JL members in the Toronto area do not want to meet someone as nice as myself. :p

The problem is that he was in our house once before. (we actually got along with them up until this happened) Actually, 2 days before he robbed our place, I took him out for a night out because he said he didn't have much cash.

Can you believe that? Living under the same room as him is a nightmare now.

You could try this if you want....

Since he probably doesn't know that you suspect him (perhaps.. i dunno.) See if you can get into his side of the house (preferrably with his knowledge), and see if you find any of your stuff?

Amazing how some return friendship. Disgusting person that one is.

I would still involve the police no matter what.
