I've fallen behind the times on checking out Slackware and I'm wondering if anyone has heard any rumours or at least can put a guess on when the next release of Slackware is due.
I've read the Slack website and I know he says he doesn't know himself, but basing a guess on past releases, can anyone make a reasonable estimate?
By reasonable, I do not mean "within 20 years".
Reason I'm asking is because I'm looking at getting a laptop and rather than installing Slack 9.1 and updating it, I'd rather use the latest version and save myself a lot of (potential) hassle.
Thanks,
James

The norm for Slack is about one a year. some have been less.......I run current and there's no hassles, use swaret....the next one should implement the 2.6 kernel.

I was reading about it last night on alt.os.slackware and most guesses were for July/August 2004.
alt.os.linux.slackware (http://groups.google.com/groups?dq=&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&threadm=c8vva4%241p3%241%40freenet9.carleton.ca&prev=/groups%3Fdq%3D%26num%3D25%26hl%3Den%26lr%3D%26ie%3 DUTF-8%26group%3Dalt.os.linux.slackware%26start%3D25)

Thanks, guys. That fits in more-or-less with when I plan on getting the laptop. I didn't think it could be too far away since it's been almost a year now already!
I did think about using Slackware-Current, but since I won't have access to the Internet to download stuff, I need a version that's been tested and the packages are known to work with eachother. Likewise, I don't fancy patching and upgrading a Slackware 9.1 version to be the latest!

Hey James, how you be durin'?
I'm hearing the same thing, somewhere between July and September.
To bad you ain't got a 'net connection cause the route that JohnT was talking about (swaret to current) works like a charm. Course the "current" tree includes the latest gcc and qt so you will have to either rebuild the stock kernel after the upgrade or build a new one afterwards.
Later,

BTW, I'm using Slackware - Current with Dropline GNOME and the 2.6.6 kernel. SWEET! :D

I'm still alive... working hard (not) as per usual... Just killing time at the mo: in a month I fly out to Fort Lauderdale and spent six weeks cruising the Gulf of Mexico. It's a hard life, being me ;)
The only net connection I have is the college's and I can't download stuff. Shame really since it's really fast (but would get a hefty speed boost with Linux :) ).
I haven't managed to update my machine at home since I took it Preston and ran Swaret on it with my mate's cable broadband link. Whilst it updated a load of stuff sweetly (I was worried - some people have had problems with it in the past) I'll have to look into automating more packages so that it stays up to date all the time.
I haven't played around with kernel 2.6 yet. I'm waiting a few months for a general reaction and the inevitable problems to be sorted out before I actually use it.
Anyway, thanks for the advice, glad it's all still going well...
James
