I am running a fresh install of RH8. I am a mid core Linux guy and feel pretty comfortable with Linux. But when I download lets say the latest version of samba from www.samba.org and try to compile it in RH* I always get errors. I have read through the documentation step by step and the configure command goes ok but when I go to run make it always gives me an error. This doesn't just happen with Samba it also happened when I tried to build the latest versions of gcc compiler and Xvnc (vnc compiled ok but Xvnc had errors). I could always get the rpm but I would rather build them myself instead of waiting for someone else to build the rpms for distribution. Is this a problem with RH Linux in general or does my compiler need updating (gcc 3.2) or is this just a freak occurrence.
If RH8 is not a good distro what flavor of Linux would be better if I want to dig into the nuts and bolts of the Linux OS.

Thx

Well, before we can tell you what the problem was, we'll need to see the error messages... ;)

Preferably the last command that the Makefile ran, also.
