Thanks. je_fro 04-24-2004, 07:22 PM You mean mozilla won't start as non-root? What is happening? Need more info... Butta 04-24-2004, 07:25 PM For example, I can ping as root but I get unknown host as user. bwkaz 04-24-2004, 09:15 PM Eh... whaaa? The only way that would make any sense (at least, the only way I can come up with) is if your /etc/nsswitch.conf, /etc/resolv.conf, or /etc/hosts files are not readable by normal users. /etc/nsswitch.conf is what tells glibc what to use for name resolution. If the "hosts" line in there contains "dns", then glibc will consult /etc/resolv.conf for the IP addresses of name servers to use. If the "hosts" line contains "files", then glibc will consult the /etc/hosts file to see if it contains a mapping from the hostname you're trying to ping to an IP address. What hostname are you trying to ping? Does it work to ping 64.233.161.99 (which is www.google.com) as your normal user? justlinux.com
