MODEM - no carrier

...I'm a real newbie, so I'm sorry if I'm off the mark. I spent a great deal of time desperating trying to get my modem to connect to my ISP. It keep cutting out (apparantly during the negotiation) with a NO CARRIER response, and I was about to give up on Linux (I know!) when I did one last search and found this. Now, I'm writing this from Konqueror with my first connection holding steady!!!
