OK, me again, that means more n00b questions, I stated in another thread that I have installed Redhat 9.0 and had questioned support. From several nice folks, I learned of the Fedora Project and have since gone to that site to read up. My question(s) involve: do I NEED to upgrade to Fedora, should I just keep Redhat 9.0 until I have more familiarity with Linux, should I nuke Redhat and just install Fedora, long hours on cable modem downloading the ISO's) OR gasp... blow it all away and get a different distro. I am hoping that the latter choice isn't the immediate one to go with as I mentioned in the other thread, I had purchased Redhat9.0 AND a large "bible" fresh off the presses for an additional $49 :(. Lastly, is Fedora actually an upgrade of Redhat or just a re-release of sorts with the newest kernel? (told ya I was a n00b). <dons flame retardant suit> OK the floor is open to suggestion please>
Edit:
Perhaps I should add, I will be using/learning on whatever I choose to install, and want to do the basics, internet, e-mail, time-wasting games, learn how to configure for local network(mixed with Windows machines), possibly using Linux box for a firewall (in addition to my router) Learning some command line(lots?), how to configure/reconfigure/troubleshooot my installation. I have signed up for a local LUG but from their webpage, it looks more like a coffee klatch than a learning evironment.
I don't think you can upgrade from Red Hat 9 to Fedora.
If I were you I would get and install Fedora. As you may have noticed, a few days ago Red Hat stopped releasing updates for Red Hat series.

Yes you can. I upgraded from Red Hat 8 to 9 to Fedora with no problems.
you can consider Fedora being a fork off of Red Hat.

Personally, I'd stick with what you have (at least for a while) since you have the book and can learn step-by-step with it. Later on, when you know a bit more, you can apply the book even if it's not exactly the same distro. Most of the basics don't change.

I'd also stick with RH9, since you have the book :D
And RedHat IS still allowing RH9 up2date (but not <=8). You'll need to update the up2date, per instructions on the site, and your bottom right button will function normally. Note, however, that version 9 is coming up on it's "end-of-life", either this July or maybe as late as December. This means that you'll no longer be able to use up2date, and have to grab things manually.
I'm still running 7.2, but I just threw RH9 on my cousin's box, and now plan to upgrade my box to 9. It IS that much nicer.

Maybe for a change you would like mandrake or SuSE???
:D redhat is dying and renamed to fedora.. and fedora is not going to be friendly as it doesnt use grub nor lilo, handicapping your ability to learn...
Thus the change might be better and you can learn more...

haha, good one.. you actually made me think for like 3 seconds...
fedora uses grub...
nearly as good as ye age ol' "bsd is dying" troll...
its the same ol' redhat we've all loved at one point or another...
Bubba56: Upgrading wouldn't be so bad if you /need/ to do it... and since redhat 9 and fedora core 1 are reasonably similiar, your book should work perfectly... better than it would with mandy or suse...
unless you see something in fedora you want (namely, just newer packages) id stick with redhat9... on the upside, once you get comfortable with that, you can venture out to bigger and better things (in my opinion, slackware, but that opinion varies greatly around here :))

Update! (Or, rather, up2date...)
RedHat has finally terminated up2date for version 9 (Shrike), as of 30 April. It has reached it's "End-of-Life", and won't be supported through the RHN.
However, You can install apt or yum, and head over to: http://www.fedoralegacy.org and get your updates there (click on "documentation" for info, "download" for files).
And XiaoKJ - RedHat is not dying, it's just throwing it's hat into the corporate ring (where the money is). It's bad news for us cheap bast^H^H^H^H users, but if RH didn't make any money, they wouldn't survive very long. Besides, there's always Fedora. Let's show those folks that they made the right decision in keeping the Hat on top :D

Of course I know redhat is not going to die straight, just that its free version (also called Red Hat) is discontinued and transferred to fedora.
Also, Fedora does not use grub, it uses rhgb, its own flavour of grub that is automatically added to the end of the kernel call line in grub.conf
You can find limited info about rhgb on fedora's site.
