the stages are on the universal CD (not the minimal one).

the other (arch-specific) CDs contain packages for doing a GRP install.

Is there going to be a gentoo 2004.0 come out??

Hayl
03-17-2004, 01:33 PM
yes, it is a new installer CD, and it is already out. that is what I awas talking about in my previous post. the "universal" disc is what you need.

since Gentoo has no overall "version", all it is is an updated installer CD.

you can still install with the old one.

Why don't you go to www.gentoo.org and do some reading rather than asking these questions here? You could find this all out there if you read the docs.

There's also a graphical installer now... I got a link to it a day or two ago. I'll post it when I get home if nobody beats me to it.

Thanks,I look on gentoo where they have all the link to download it i don't even see the grp to download.

Hayl

the grp stuff is on the normal mirrors on the download page under the architecture you have. i.e. the pentium3 packages are under pentium3, etc.

looks like they changed the dir structure of all the mirrors, you will have to look around yourself for it... it has changed since I last looked and I don't have time to look around.

Okay, here's the link for the graphical installer. Never tried it, just heard about it. Use it at your own risk, YMMV, etc.

nice idea but his will make me never use it.. from the above posted web site:

"the installer uses the RPM package manager to install the Stage3, Kernel and Portage."

in addition, it is a stage3-only installer

what do you need, look here>
http://gok.customer.netspace.net.au/power2bash/buildMin/buildMin.html

why not do a stage bootstrap install from an already running distro or from an already runing distro create a space on the hard drive and copy a stage .tar of gentoo and then untar it and make it bootable then from there take out what ever you might not want or need then emerge kde gnom or what ever you wan't. and you don't have to have kde or gnom. but i think that what you wan't is to create your own distro if so look hear

Hayl

no, you download the packages iso for your architecture.

the pacaklges CD has all of the GRP pacakges - which is basically KDE, Gnome, and XFree

The Universal would is good if you want to install a system off-line, it has most of the base as precomipled packages. Great if you don't want to take all day (or two or three) installing Gentoo.

I use the minimum install to get started though and usually start from stage 2

elite,

you have asked about the Gentoo install discs in the last little bit at _least_ 3-4 times, and someone has told you what discs you need each time and/or told you what the discs were for - including some urls that were given to you as well.

not to mention the fact that the discs you require are discussed in the Gentoo install documentation which you have obviously not read if you do not know what disc(s) to download.

i am going to merge all of your Gentoo threads that ask for what cds to burn into this one.

can you please either a: read the old posts/answers that people have already given (which are now conveniently merged into this one thread for you so they are all in one place) or b: use this now as a main thread for re-asking the same questions over and over?

thank you.

mahdi, the universal CD is the bootable CD now (both minmal for downloading stage taballs and a full copy with stage tarballs are available). the packages are now on the Arch CDs (non-bootable).

Yup, I just installed Gentoo on my desktop (finally got tired of Fedora ;)) and used the minimal CD. Used links2 to download the stage2-athlonxp and was off.

The Universal CD is 700MB and the minimal is 80, for getting it installed sooner it wasn't a tough choice :)

if you havent downloaded the newest ( 2004.0 universal disk (http://gentoo.ccccom.com/releases/x86/2004.0/livecd/universal/install-x86-universal-2004.0.iso) ) version of gentoo id recomend that

unless you have a fast net connection or you just dont want to wait for download/compile then you'll also want the disk that matches your system (((eg mine was athlonxp for my xp 2800 barton)))
you can get that here

arch specific binary cds (http://gentoo.ccccom.com/releases/x86/2004.0/livecd/)

if i were you id download these two books and put them on a second box or print them out

over 100 pages though

assuming x86 platform

gentoo hand book (http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml)

any platform for this one but you need both

desktop configuration guide (http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/desktop.xml)

i used these books for my three installs and after the third i remembered most of what i needed. thry have a whole lot of stuff pertaining to any distro when you need a little help.
