Sun has made a free x86 version of Solaris 10 for everyone to download since last month. I think their approach is a good move. :D
Has anyone tried that? How is it? Since it is free, will the kernel sources and other sources be provided too?

Just heard that some people said Solaris is a super beast on SPARC machine, that really? how about Solaris on PC, and its overall performance for users?

Are you sure its free? I looked on Sun's site and didn't see anything about a free x86 Solaris download. Could you share the link?

<EDIT> Below is the Solaris 9 trial, now looking for 10 </EDIT>

<EDIT2> I have found 10. The address is: http://wwws.sun.com/software/solaris/solaris-express/sol_index.html

The download link is at the bottom of the page. If you want a 90 day trial of 9, look at the bottom of my post....</EDIT2>

I can only find a 90 day trial, which is still pretty good since I generally reinstall every 60 days...

Excellent, looks like I will be installing Solaris 9 tonight. I'll be back with a review.

Hopefully, they have done a lot of work on it... the last time I tried x86 Solaris, the hardware support was terrible and the entire thing was very buggy.

matte03,

it's at http://wwws.sun.com/software/solaris/solaris-express/get.html Sun's website. Somehow it says download Solaris 10, but it points to Software Express  Still wonder why they didn't just use the original name. Is that the correct Solaris 10? cuz I downloaded 3 CD iso-s of it.

There is something that I doubt, but just to make sure I still wanna ask this question :o, since they are giving away it free, will sources be provided free too or just free OS but close-sourced?? ( like Kernel sources)

p.s.
just a thought... why getting solaris 9, since 10, is currently available? (software express = solaris 10, if that's true)
I would like to hear your review too, tell me about how the installation is and running on your computer.

well... I did at least kind of try at the installation, but I freaked out.. cuz lots of things that I didn't understand during the installation process (unlike linux, I think I get used to the HOW-TO how to install Slackware, Mandrake, RedHat up and running). Installing Solaris is uber new to me :( , that's why I chickened out after a while, cuz I wasn't sure if I did things right or not.

and to admin
why moving this thread to .iso Confused - which distro?
cuz I thought this isn't asking about which distro "confusion-oriented questions and comparision with other distros." (well.. it might in a way later on, depends on what other people think of it), but my main intention of posting this thread to "other UNIX-based" is mostly to ask about evaluation of Solaris  still don't get it :o

I have all the images downloaded and burned but the install wont boot on my spare laptop Gateway Solo 1100 I believe but the install starts on my HP Ze4560 so if I can somehow resize my current partitions so I dont have to reinstall I will install Solaris and Linux on my notebook....and that's the current status.

sol-beta-10 ..........zip is what I'm downloading so I hope it's Solaris 10;) I guess I'll have to figure out which box to wipe out to try Solaris. I've got plenty of sleep time to figure it out though.:D

according the SUN sparc's solaris machines at my school. it has um... X, i think fvwm that it is running on.
maybe the system admins loaded those on the machine.
don't know if fvwm comes as a default thought, but i believe it has some kind of x windows , cdx or something forgot the name :D

the whole download license is pretty confusing. i got solaris 9 from here:
http://wwws.sun.com/software/solaris/binaries/get.html
and it just says it's free. i got the link from osnews.com i think a week or 2 ago (saying x86 solaris is free again for download).

I think this thread is dead now... nobody says anything about solaris 10 afterwards.

...Of course they don't- It's too hot there-- a gnu would burn up on the sun!

I'm running Sol10 on a couple sparc box's and I have gnome 2.6 and kde-3.2.1 running on them. ;-)

I just found this site last week:

http://www.blastwave.org/

I'm not sure how clean there packages are, but everything seems to be running.
