I started thinking ( a new hobby for me :) ) and I live in Augusta, Georgia, USA (I don't think there is a conflict in that statement :) ) .
Are there any projects commercial users in this immediate area? So I started asking around , "Do you use Linux?", "Do you know of any companies using Linux?", "Are you free for dinner tonight?".
And really, I haven't found any projects/commercial companies using Linux. The network people are still using AIX and Unix when they haven't switched to Windows. There are some student projects at the local university.
But I couldn't find any real widespread use apart from the scattered users, (but I did get a dinner date).
Any luck in your community/city? Know of any companies in your area? any community projects?

As it happens, I just got back from an impromptu meeting of East Manchester geeks... we are setting up a user group / computer-recycling project for the local area.

Aims are roughly to make use of old hardware, learn some more for ourselves, and let people know about what you can do with linux and how much money and effort you can save.

So yeah, we have the beginnings of a Linux community project, I guess...

As for companies, I just spotted an ad for a "software testing analyst" which had the words Unix and Linux in the description, so I'm going to apply :) Other than that, I'm struggling to think of local Linux projects. But I do have a couple of friends from uni who run their own consultancy, and one of them is pretty hot on Linux.

Around here, its mostly just ISPs and web development firms that make use of it, primarily because of the cost.

My work (Software Company) doesn't though :( 100% MS.

I swear by all that is holy that I'll have a Linux box on this network soon though!
