Do any of you read Slashdot? I'm sure the majority of you do. I guess I feel compelled to comment on the fact that a good percentage of the people who post there don't seem real bright. For example, if you go over and read the "New 2.6.5 Kernel" thread you'll see all kinds of people *****ing. *****ing about drivers, how people who coded them did a half hearted job...how the 2.6 kernel is not reliable...all kinds of mindless swill that just isn't true. It's just a giant troll fest there.

I agree with you somewhat, I don't really read many of the comments anyways.. I look at slashdot kind of like the tabloid of the internet..in some ways, but yeah, the comments are full of trolls.

I only go to Slashdot when I am in need of some humour.....I prefer other venues when I am in search of information, or intelligent comment and tend to stay away from sites that are really not much more than feeding frenzys for the functionally illiterate. Perhaps the saddest thing is that the majority of posters "appear" to be more concerned about their own "self importance" than actually submitting something of material value or simply keeping quiet and learning something. :p

What? 2.6.5 is out? Aww crap, I just compiled 2.6.5-rc3 Friday! I hate it when that happens!
Time to diff the 2.6.4->2.6.5-rc3 patch and the 2.6.4->2.6.5 patch to see if anything major was done at the last minute...
Not here, I never liked Slashdot...

If you read the front page, and perhaps some of the more specific topics, they turn up good/interesting stories from time to time.
A site as big as Slashdot is going to attract a lot of the dregs of society :) If you're going to read the "discussions" though, it's normally a good idea to browse with a threshold of at least 2 or 3, so that the utter crud gets filtered out, and you start to see the people who actually know what they're talking about :)

Slashdot became the stomping grounds of trolls and clueless idiots long ago. I only read these days for amusement or to chuckle at replies to articles written in perl (sometimes you find great bash scripts on there, like "color coded SCOx quotes updated in real time").
How can I take a website that still uses HTML 3.2 transitional seriously?

I like to read the comments sometimes because out of the 1000's of crap posts, there are a few very good posts

Try changing your threshold to -1 sometime, you'll find alot of good stuff. :D
In fact, there are even "trolling groups" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slashdot_trolling_phenomena) whose sole purpose is to troll on slashdot. Heck, some of these groups even have their own ASCII art intros and perlscripts to automate trolling!!!

Wow. It's amazing that people have enough spare time for organized Slashdot trolling, and even more amazing that it's widespread enough for a Wikipedia write up.

I've never read Slashdot. Well, I've visited it once or twice, but I don't see the appeal ...

At the start of my workday, I enjoy a good laugh before I get started. A visit to userfriendly.org, slashdot.org, and google news for SCO always lightens my day :D

ROTFLMAO :D
I've seen them a few times before [when i 'mod' on there once in a great while....]
Another 'troll' technique there is to proclaim their 1337|\|355 by posting the first comment and promoting their agenda.

yep... it's always quite funny to change the threshold to -1 and see a post, about 20 posts down, titled very cleverly....
FIRST POST FSCKERS!!!

I read Slashdot from time to time. Once in blue moon you can find a good discussion in the 'Ask Slashdot' section.
