I am trying to install SuSE 8.2 on an AMD Athlon desktop with NVIDIA GEForce video card. Once the initial install is completed, the screen starts to flash as it tries to bring up KDE. I figured this had to do with nvidia drivers so I killed X and tried to log into sax to fix the display problem, but even here, the screen flashes (switches between black and normal every 2-3 seconds).

Curiously enough, I had a working SuSE8.2 environment which I recently upgraded to SuSE9.0. One of my apps is not working on SuSE9.0 so I am trying to install SuSE8.2 on a new partition to continue using the old app and try to figure out what changed between the two versions of SuSE that caused things to break.

Post the "Graphics device section" of your /etc/X11/XF86Config file.
Have you downloaded and installed a driver for your card, or are you using the generic "nv"?

well, I browsed around in the SuSE support database and found something that worked. I was able to start sax using the -l option which starts sax with 640*480@60Hz and DDC probing is disabled. Once I got into sax I was able to configure my nvidia card.
