When installing SuSE, the installation interface asks me to verify that disk one of the installation is in my CD-ROM drive. It then proceeds to tell me that the disk was not found, even though it is actually in the drive. I am using the SuSE 9.0 FTP install ISO that I burned to a CD-R. Does anyone know what could be going on? The drive is a Samsung SD-616T if that helps.

As far as I know it always does that. It will then bring you to a main menu, of sorts, at which point you can choose to install. It will then, at some point, ask you what method you'd like to use (CD and FTP are the two that stick out, there is a third).
You'll want to get the ip address and the location of the directory you want (ie, /pub/suse/i386/current) for a server you have a good connection to.

After I hit enter at the verification prompt, it tells me that it is unable to find the installation CD. Then it takes me to a menu. I select the install option, and it tells me that it is unable to mount the CD.

So that would start the installer, but where does the packages etc. reside? Are you installing from one of the SuSE ftp servers?

Yes. Did I choose the wrong option?

Everything is working now. I stupidly chose CD-ROM as the install medium instead of network. Thanks everyone for your help!

That is why I was asking where the packages reside.
Glad to see you figured it out. Enjoy!!!

Now when rebooting the computer after a Linux boot, I am informed that the computer is install mode and that the amount of available memory has changed. It then limits my memory to 256MB. Any idea what this could be caused by?

Still have the cd in the drive? Are you sure the installation was completed successfully? How much memory do you have?
Perhaps post the exact error messages so we can search i.e. www.google.com/linux or the SuSE knowledgebase.

I can avoid those error messages by booting with acpi off.

You can find other boot/install options in the Additional Boot Option link from the Linux Installation Guides sticky thread at the top of this forum.
http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/linux/RHL-9-Manual/install-guide/ch-bootopts.html
'noacpi' and 'ide=nodma' seem to be the most popular boot options to fix install/boot problems.
