I recently installed RedHat v. 9.0 on an old Packard Bell system with an AMD K-6. At first, it installed fine. I was just using it to run as a server. I did a minimal install, then went back and upgraded, adding Vsftpd, lynx, httpd, and mysql. We couldn't get MySQL to work right, so, we did a clean install. Ever since then, I've been having trouble getting the install to finish. The first disc would finish fine, and then, the second disc would start, and right at the end of the install of the second disc, it had maybe 12mb left, and then it went to the screen where it's starting x-server, the annaconda screen, and says that the install was exited abnormally. I could always get the first disc to do fine, but the second would never finish. Well, I tried a few different things. I had a bright idea and tested the media, well, the first disc said that the media-test failed. Ever since then, the install wont even start, or finish the first disc. I fdisked and the install started, but the install image would never finish going to the HD. (Maxtor 20gb 7200 rpm, 1-yr 1/2 old) Now it wont even start the install now.

A friend of mine said he thinks it might be a hardware problem, that's just now surfacing. I'm not sure. I know the systems old, it's always worked. The CD-ROM is kinda ****ty, but it worked fine before. It has new 256mb sdram memory. I'm a pretty big newb when it comes to linux, I've worked with Mandrake, Debian, and RedHat a little bit, but all in a graphic environment, which I'm not doing now.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Have you tried installing from another (Windows/Linux) bootable CD to see if it's a hardware problem?
