Hi,
I just installed SUSE 9.0 on a Gateway Solo 1100 laptop, everything went well, but I can not get my trendware tew-301pc wireless card to work. I have contacted Trendware and they sent me some files, but they where complied under gcc 2 and I guess SUSE 9.0 has gcc 3 or so the warning went when I tried to install the driver.
Yes, I tried the amtel driver from sourgeforge, it uses a TI chipset, tried to get files from TI. No luck what so ever.
I can't get this card to work for the life of me, so my question is "Does anybody know which card I can buy and will work under SUSE 9.0 without downloading this and compiling that?" I know that sounds lazy, but I have been trying for the past 4 weeks to get this card to work. I could have purchased 4 cards with all the time I have put in getting my 301pc to work.
Yes, I tried calling SUSE to get a list of cards known to work with SUSE 9.0 but they would not tell which one to buy nor have any listed in their hardware database.
Oh, one more thing, I do not have extensive knowledge of linux yet, so please type slow so I can understand. :)

You could search the SuSE hardware compatibility list to see if they have any wireless network cards that are supported.
The SuSE knowledgebase search results for 'wireless' (http://portal.suse.com/PM/page/search.pm?q=wireless&t=keyword&sdb=true&m=25&l=en&x=true) which may give you a few ideas on what cards are supported.

I did search the hardware database.
here is what you get when searching for pc card:
http://hardwaredb.suse.de/productSearch.php?PHPSESSID=f253ae3fa30d2e85c08f5c 9fe0ec3773&LANG=en_UK&searchtype=extended&update_session=1&f_manufactor=&f_vendorId=&f_device=&f_deviceId=&f_method=AND&f_supported=0&f_categories%5B%5D=130&f_dist=&f_arch=
There is no link for wireless on http://hardwaredb.suse.de
Here is the result from the support database for trendware
http://portal.suse.com/PM/page/search.pm?q=trendware&t=keyword&sdb=true&m=25&l=en&x=true
Here is the result for trendnet
http://portal.suse.com/PM/page/search.pm?q=trendnet&t=keyword&sdb=true&m=25&l=en&x=true
If you search for Wireless lans you get this:
http://portal.suse.com/sdb/en/2002/11/wavelan.html#gh
Which has links to the chipset vendors, but no specific "USE THIS CARD, IT WILL WORK UNDER SUSE 9.0" .
I mean I recieved one file from trendware, but it was for Mandrake, they would not tell me if it worked for SUSE.
Thanks

If you have the how-to's installed, have a look at
/usr/share/doc/howto/en/html/Wireless-HOWTO.html
The files in /usr/src/linux/drivers/net/wireless should help to determine which wireless cards are natively supported by your current kernel version.

After all this time I did one final search for the driver for my wireless card, I found linuxant. It is a ndis driver loader. Downloaded it, installed it, uploaded the windows XP drivers unto my linux install. In about 30 minutes I was able to do what I could not for the past 2 months. I am running the trial version, will buy the licensed version tommorrow.
Yes I know there is an open source ndis driver on sourceforge, but linuxant rpm's it for SUSE 9.0, offers an easy install, easy directions to get my card going. After 2 months of download this / compile that, I was weary of trying to get my wireless card to work under linux.
Worth the money (my time is more vauable then the 20 it will cost me to buy).
Besides, it blows my mind running xp drivers under linux. Better to download before it becomes illegal!

thanks for all the help!

Okay, I think I finally figured out something that I have been struggling with for a few days now. This involves having a wireless card on a laptop with an internal network controller as well.
I used www.linuxant.com driverloader to build a module for the Netgear WAG511 network card, on SuSE 8.1 (kernel 2.4.19-4GB). That part all worked quite smoothly.
I then found that I had to run:
/sbin/route add default gw 192.168.0.1
(where 192.168.0.1 is the IP address of my wireless router/gateway) to have the wireless card be able to use the router as a gateway, and so access the internet.
After a lot of trial and error and web searches it appears that the critical point is to load the module for the wireless first and then load the module for the onboard network controller.
In the case of SuSE, I just went into YaST2, Basic Networking, Network Card configuration and deleted the entry for eth0 (which was set up for the onboard network). Upon rebooting eth-pcmcia-0 was setup with interface eth0.
I still have to sometimes eject and re-insert the cardbus card to have it initialize properly.
The output of /sbin/route indicates that the gateway is now properly set up, and I can now browse the web.
