I have RH9 and SBLive! value soundcard. However, my soundcard is OEM and even Windows and creative's native drivers cannot recognise the card. In Windows, I could force the driver to be installed, but I don't know abt that in Linux (pardon, I am a newbie!) RH and creative's support did little to ease the problem, and I cannot use sndconfig to install the drivers as it would cause the computer to hang midway.
(Creative even told me to use sndconfig when I specially included that in my query!)
I am really scared to compile the kernel (I read that online...) as I am, of course, a newbie. Can anyone help me? I would go to the extent of installing another linux distro and deleting the RH one I am using. Thank you beri much!

Moving to the Hardware forum since Installation is actually meant for distro install issues.

According to the ALSA project this card is supported under the emu10k1 module.
Did you try as root.
modprobe snd-emu10k1?
Also there are many threads on here about sound. Doing a seach first on sblive value could have saved you some time.

Too many lately. JJB is correct as searching the forums for sblive will find you lots of suggestions you can try.
And ensure you have PnP OS disabled in the bios.

It may seem funny, but I had been around the web trying to search for solutions. For example, creative's and RH's site. I love to log in as root although people had been warning me abt it.
I tried modprobe, yet it would cause my comp to hang useless, just like snd-config. One of the places that gave me headache was the fact that my card had a device name of c66c:c66c. modprobe -f also would not work. It will only force the driver to be installed but not associate with the sound card.

Does
lspci
list your soundcard and type?
Have you ensured PnP OS is disabled in the bios?
