i have searched the forums, i have googled and i cant find anything on this. me and a friend of mine worked on it for about 3-4hrs and still nodda, so maybe you guys can help.
i have a SB Live! Value 16-bit card. mandrake 9.2.
linux knows the sound card is there and has the correct driver installed, but yet i have no sound. so i tried changing drivers(i had 3 options and non would work however 2 were variations of the emu10k1 driver) i went into alsamixer and all my sound options were muted, everything from speakers, to cd-the sblive option its self. so i unmuted them all(and did recieve a nano second of whitenoise) but the sb live option would not allow me to unmute, i would hit enter and it would unmute for half a second then automatically mute its self again. also the way i found out i didnt have sound: i put a cd in pulled up totem i believe and it was playing the cd but with no sound so i looked around and couldnt find anything wrong and then the totem program froze and i couldnt close the window it was in and then another program froze and i had to reboot, well now when i log on it the system freezes shortly after so i only get to use linux for a few min before its frozen.
the sound does work on my windows partition so its not the hardware, i am a noob so try not to confuse me pls i just installed linux a couple weeks ago so im still green.
im gonna post a thread i started on another forum cause its worded a bit different and may help so here it is:
ok here goes, im posting this before work so i might edit it when i get home if need be but heres my prob:
ive had linux a couple weeks now and ive been going through and learning the system, i discovered i have no sound, i checked alsamixer and everything was muted so i unmuted everything except for the SB Live! option because it wouldnt let me unmote it, the way i discovered i have any sound was that i put a cd in to listen to and i had no sound, so while i was checking stuff my pc started to slow down, eventually freezing, i went through this several times with the same results each time, i do have the correct driver i have checked and rechecked it, this is when i went in to alsamixer and found everything muted and like i said i fixed it all except the sb live option because it simply wouldnt let me. i had kidgenius help me on this and were both stumped, we are fairly certain that the driver is what is causing the overload, nad btw ever since i unmuted stuff the pc freezes with out me having to place a cd in it, my linux distro is almost useless at this point i usually have a couple min to get in it before it freezes, my soundcard is sb live value vers. my distro is mandrake and im using kde, any help is appreciated and pls keep it simple cause im still a noob. thanks
----edit----
i guess it could and is likely to be the muted sb live option in alsa mixer but when i get to that option and try to unmute it unmutes far a nanosecond and then automutes, so how do i unmute it?
thanks for the help in advance
