I've been using Linux for the past 4 years and any newbies out there be warned... It's CRAP... DOESEN"T WORK!
as a desktop. the mouse will never function as it should, there are no programmes beyond real player 8 (1997) that are close to being contemporary... CD burners, Chat, Office programs, forget it... It sucks... You will waste hundreds or thousands of hours on a system that cannot deliver anything beyond a FREE distribution... Weigh up the ceasless/pointless configuration of this supposed free system and you'll murder the next penguin you see...
Is there not but one OPEN source geek that can figure out that what WE want is a system (Like windoze) that actually RUNS and remembers our wishes?
Linux SUCKS and if Bill Gates wants $200 for an infinately superior system ... I'm in....

Sorry you had a bad time with it but we prefer people to be more objective in this forum (ie, I have a problem can I have some help?). If we can help you with individual problems I am sure there are many who will help you. If you like windows better you can use it. Some like linux better. Linux was not made for n00bs and I suppose it will some day but I am happy with it now. Moral: each to his own

Iwill admit that using linux takes a longer attention span . And that aftermarket manufacturers are FORCED to amke and sometimes degrade their products, so windblows can use them....also, I've had as many mouse problems with either OS, and I stay on this side of the street because it just makes sense.......

A troll? naw, trolls try harder. :)
for new linux users/potential linux users, ill run down these problems real quick:
"the mouse will never function as it should" - my mouse didn't function as it should either (no scrollwheel) but i did a bit of reading (on JL, no less) and found a quick one line addition to my xfree config file. Problem solved, your milage may vary.
"there are no programmes beyond real player 8 (1997) that are close to being contemporary" <- this seems... weird... i would never install real player under windows anyways, its crappy software. XMMS works great, mplayer works great, xine works... without knowing what this poster's needs are, i couldn't point him in the right direction... my problem with linux is often there is such a WEALTH of choices, i don't know which to pick :)
"CD burners, Chat, Office programs, forget it... It sucks.." <- trolling, the obvious is true.... not all of it is quite as good as you could buy for windows (OO.o is a little behind Office, in all honesty), but i don't have any real hangups... it works, the price is right.
"Linux SUCKS and if Bill Gates wants $200 for an infinately superior system ... I'm in...." <- the problem i have with windows is that often it crashes and dies unexpectantly... or if i want to fix some nagging little thing, its not POSSIBLE to fix...
One thing ive seen a bunch of times with xp/2k is that you go to boot up the computer one day, and it refuses... you go into safe mode, and it hangs up at "mup.sys"... you hit the internet, and lots of other people have that problem, and the only solution anyone seems to have is "reinstall windows". With linux, I have yet to find a problem that isn't solvable with some configuration...
and of course, the greatest thing about linux is choice... and not using linux is a choice you can make.
Lordevereste: goodbye.
Carbon-12: I've noticed the same thing... can you run a typewriter? hehe... that always kills me... I'm great with computers, but the damned mechanical typewriters get me... fax machines too, to a lesser extent... guess it all depends on the technology you are accustumed to :)

Umm, linux works fine for me. With the exception of high-end gaming, it can do everything.
if you don't call gnome 2.4, xmms, x-chat, openoffice, abi-word, gaim, mozilla firefox contemporary, I don't know what is.

Speaking of levels of technology....
How many of you remember vinyls? (You know, record albums, 33's...)
Well, one day, my now 8 year old son and I were talking, and we got into a discussion about technology and how it had changed. We talked Cd's and cassettes and laser disc, and then we hit records, and record players. (Oh yeah, I remember now)
We were discussing how these types of things worked. About how cd's use lasers, same with laser discs. And I brought up records, and a needle needing to be used to play records.
He had no clue what I was talking about, so I described a record player, and records. I told him that they were black, and had music on both sides of them, and were about sooo big.
Not missing a beat, my son blinked a couple times as he thought about it, and then said, "Oh. It's like a big cd. I see now!"
I felt old. :(
It's also one of the best memories that I have with him.

You would think that after using Linux for 4 years you might know how to install and configure hardware and software by now. You must be a mighty sloooow learner (aka dense).
Of course this is a free world so you can use whatever you please and you don't need to tell us about it.
