i would say duh of course it is.
if you do your install right you can have windows and linux until your sure you want to be linux only
you dont need to know much( youll learn most by trying it out) it has become an even better alternative to windoze/mac than it was a year ago and its only going to get better
so for a newbee i recomend mandrake or mabe fedora even though fedora has problems. if you dont want to install it and you just want to try it got to knoppix.comknoppix (knoppix.com) and download it this gives you knoppix live on cd then you can try out knoppix with X windows and kde without any damage to your current os
one of the best testing os's when your not sure.
if you dont want to download it you can get it for less than five bucks here discount linux cds (http://www.edmunds-enterprises.com/linux/cart.php/ba/pdtl/product/160)
i really recomend you try this one

I would try the bootable distro no install needed, like knoppix
it will boot from your cdrom and will help you figure out how compatible you and your system are with linux.
Download the ISO image than burn iso to cdrom allthough you need software that can handle the iso on your windows system
Next would to do a dual boot system so as to keep windows which i assume you are using now.
I like SuSE for its easy and newby friendly but will cost U since there is no iso avable for free but if you have a fast internet connection you can do the network install for free.
Mandrake is a good choice also and free for the iso
the D-Link linux support sucks though you would need to give much more info
