The competition between my Windows only associates and me has finally come to a head. My Linux box at worked finally crashed due to a heat sink failure frying the processor. I was able to recover homebuilt PC by moving the hard drives to another box, booting with bare.i and recompiling a kernel that was suitable for a Pentium II.
Prevously this box had been and incredibly stable Athalon XP, no loadable module support, and everything built in. It's natural to say that the Athalon XP kernel would not boot on a Pent II.
The same day our Windows Server 2003 PDC had to be rebooted because of updates. We will see who lasts the longest.
Their Jibe #1: Why did your linux box crash? I thought Linux didn't crash?
My Reply: Any box crashes when it's CPU overheats practically melts.
Their Jibe #2: Why did it take you over an hour to recover the box.,
My Reply: I didn't recover the box, I migrated the data to a new box.....in just over an hour......let's see you do that with windows.....provided the boxes are no where near the same hardware.
Their Jibe #3: Well the PDC doesn't need to be rebooted.
My Reply: You mean the PDC with redundant power supplies, heat sinks, processors, and even a SCSI Raid 1? Well, I guess it's only weakness is windowsupate.microsoft.com.
Their Jibe #4: (As I was compiling a trimmed and streamlined 2.4.24 kernel watching data scroll down the screen.) I've never had to do this in Windows.
My Reply: Unfortunately, neither have I.
