Hello everyone, I have been using Fedora Core 1 for a couple of weeks with no big problems in my home network. We have XP, OS X and now Fedora running with just a few little quirks. Before I go posting around or searching for help here in the forums, I just wanted to ask all of you if this is a great forum for Fedora assistance.
I haven't used Linux before as much as I have now. I've tried other distro's before in the past but just for a little while, then gone back to Windows. I've been a mac user for almost 3 years now but have always wanted another os platform to use on a pc.
I hope this is a great forum to get assistance and to also share my experiences. Thanks.

I dont work here, but I am here everyday and this is the best place to get answers...
There isn't one question that I have posted that this forum hasn't answered yet...and I got lots more ??? for everybody.
I am loading Fedora right now myself. I am looking for a distro I like for my desktop.
We run RH8 on a handful of servers, but I haven't committed to a desktop distro yet...any ideas?

This is a good forum for just about any linux question. Everybody here is really helpful so you can feel confident that if you post you will get an answer (assuming you ask a good question, not "How do I get linux to work" or something like that :-)

Stay tuned for our new 'Best Distro' forum. Should be lots of fun. In the meantime, have a look through the very long 'Best distro' sticky thread in this forum.

My favorite is 'Newbie here needs help'.
Always search before posting your question as most have been asked and answered many times before. Search the JL forums, Google for Linux ( www.google.com/linux ) and your distros online documentation, forums, usergroups etc. and then if you cannot find the solution, post here. :)

When??? I have been reading the Best distro sticky thread and it doesn't make up my mind for me!
Fedora installed OK...i tried Gentoo but the stage1,2,3 thing is confusing and slackware, well, slackware. I don't like redhat 'cause, well, its so popular!
So I look forward to the new forum! Thanks

After we have a contest to pick the name of the new forum. Should be posted at the end of this week.
It's kinda hard for anyone to recommend a 'best distro' for you as it really depends on your own requirements.
We've had some members ask for suggestions and then they find out the recommended distro (i.e. latest version of Mandrake) will not even install on their hardware for some reason while the latest version of Redhat will.
Download a few distros and try them all until you find one that is to your liking. Of course every distro can be customized to your hearts content to make it how you like. Uninstall the apps you do not want and install those that you do.

Read some of the reviews etc.

I hope that was a joke, because it made me laugh.

I use Fedora Core 1 on my desktop and love it. I have had very little problems, which most have been fixed from the updates.
Fedora is good if you enjoy updating your kernel weekly (there was one week where there were 2 kernel updates!)
I just installed the FC2test1 on my laptop...OOPS!
The "update" didn't work too well, maybe I had too much customizing? A fresh install was better, but lots of problems...stay away from "test releases" unless you really like filling out bug reports ;)

Okay, isn't this like saying, "I don't like Toyotas because they're so popular!"?
In my humble opinion, there are only two criteria that need to be met for "your distro":
1) Does your *system* like it?
2) Do you like (or are comfortable with) it?
I had originally installed RH7.0, but there was something wrong with the up2date utility. I then downloaded and burned Mandrake to try, but it didn't like my system (read: I can't say it's good/bad - it just wouldn't install). I gave the CDs to a friend, who had no trouble with installing on his system, and he's a happy 'Draker. So, I found RH7.2, and it works flawlessly. Many updates and enhancements later, and she's still grinding away.
Does this mean I hate every other distro? No. I just found one that worked, and stuck with it. I'm used to how RH works, so I'm happy using it. As soon as I get more parts, I'll be slapping together a box for my cousin, and will probably give Fedora a try - if it works. If not, there are more distros out there...

Thanks guys for the responses and I'm not here to ask "How do I install Linux?" questions! LOL. I'm abit more experienced than that!
I do have a small list of questions and issues to get answers too, but I will gather my info first and then post. I hate when people post half baked questions without specific information on the problem. You go through several posts trying to gather the details before finding an answer!
Thanks again and I really like the site, there's nothing else out there like it.
