So I'm at High Point University yesterday for my interviews for the Presidential Scholarship competition. I go into my first interview and sit down. I am greeted by two students and a natively French speaking French teacher. We've been talking for a while and she says "So you are into computers it says on this paper...so you are kind of like geek, no?"

I told her that I was sort of a geek and tried to joke and laugh it off. Later in the interview we talked about the mutual experience of reading Stephen Hawking and other geeky things, but the whole thing certainly took me by surprise.

Any similar experiences from my fellow Linux using geeks?

lol, I haven't had many similar experiences except when we are discussing software and I say I don't use windows people reply and say they don't think a version is out for mac. I then say I use linux and they just sorta move back and sigh sorta pitying me because it is supposedly tough to use. :)

Yeah it's strange, even on my computing science course, when i say i use linux i get strange reactions, or people just kinda change the subject. So i kinda say to them look, you need to broaden your outlook or something or your going to be stuck on one path when you leave here, open your mind (just my personal opinion though...lol).

Cheers :-)

People are there to learn; it's silly to mock people for not knowing something *before* they finish the course.

Teach them and let them make their own minds up on what they prefer :)

Sorry if it sounded wrong, i don't actually intend to mock them though, it's sounds different in real life than on a board.

Lucky for me High Point U runs Linux in their CS computer labs. The CS profs are geeky enough to know what's going on all the way down to assembler (perhaps beyond), but have the social skills (it appears) to communicate difficult concepts. I can't wait for college!

My dad said that when he's at work, he likes to talk about me using Linux. The geekier people will say, "Oh, what disto?" and my dad gets to reply, "He runs Gentoo."

"Gentoo? What's that?"

"Well, it's a distrobution[sic] where you download and compile almost everything from scratch (the way he installed it)."

And then those guys go, "wow, cool, smart kid, too!"

Ahhhh..... the good life. :D

The people at the chair I work for at the local U think it's pretty geeky when I refuse to step outside the building without sunglasses going out for lunch because sunlight's so much brighter than my monitor screen. :D
