I wasn't too sure where to post this as it's not really a 'request for help' or 'how do I ...', rather I am just interested in how others would setup their partition table in this situation. If I am wrong in posting here please move it! :p

Well, I have just got myself a new toy - a nice little Dell laptop - 500MHz processor, 64MB RAM (will be 256 by tonight) 6GB HD - which I am about to install Slackware 9.1 on.

I am quite confident in installing Linux - I have given most distros a go - but never on a laptop or on a harddrive of this size. I would like to know how you would all partition a 6GB harddrive to boot slackware - what partitions would you have? A really simple /, /swap, /boot or something more complex with /var /user/local etc., and what sizes would you make them all?.

Im just generally interested and looking for a bit of inspiration.

PS: I'm not trying to start a flamewar here! :D

Cheers,
Jme

Various partitioning schemas you can find on the Slack's web site. Is really depending on what you want.
Mine is /,/swap,/boot but I have that on a 60GB disk. Once I had an /usr & /var partition as well (installed DB2 & mysql and data was in var for me).
Think what you wanna do and then you can choose a schema you may like.

It should work, I put mandrake on like 2 gigs

Thanks for your replies. I thought that I wouldn't have any problems as I have already got my webserver which is a P233 with 3.5GB HD running Debian 3.0r1.

I was more interested in the way that people would partition the 6GB HD for normal use to get the most out of the limited spec of the system.

If it were me i'd still use 3 partitions.

/boot 32m
/swap 512m (could easily get away with less)
/ (whats left)

with 256 meg of ram, slack and a light wm.
500 proc should purr quite nice.

Here's what I would do:

/boot 32MB
/home 1GB
swap 256MB
/ <Whatever is left>
