I have just received a couple of DVD-movies (on disc) that I would like to view and rip. What software should I go for?
Windows ripper (don't know if the movie are "protected")
Windows DVD player (VOB)
Linux ripper (don't know if the movie are "protected")
Linux DVD player (VOB)

Most are protected/encryped.
I've always used Xine. SuSE 9.0 Pro includes everything you need (Xine/Kaffeine) except for playing encrypted DVD's of which I then need to install libdvdcss. Works great !!

For Linux, DVD::Rip (http://www.exit1.org/dvdrip/) for ripping and Xine/ogle for playing.
For Windows, DVDDecrypter (http://www.dvddecrypter.com) for ripping and PowerDVD for playing.

I use Ogle on my FreeBSD Box (it can do wonders for low end hardware) but prefer Totem (based on Xine) for Linux. It has a great gui and is available via synaptic.
